Shin Chan: Adventures in Cineland (Shin Chan: Arashi no Yobu Cinema - Land no Daibouken ?) is a video game released for Game Boy Advance on April 16, 2004. A remake on the DS titled Crayon Shin -Chan: Arashi o Yobu Cinema-Land: Kachinko Gachinko Daikatsugeki! was released in 2008.

Plot

In this game, Shin-chan and his family visit Cinema Land where they go through to a parallel dimension where Action Kamen is a real thing, and they must help him to beat the Haigure Mao.

Why It's A Cinematic Adventure

  1. To start off, this game is a major improvement over the previous games, especially the platformers since this game had an improved gameplay and even add some things that the other games didn't had, more details will be explained below.
  2. The concept of this game taking place in cinema and that Shin Chan need to help Action Kamen is an amazing concept and is actually unique even by Shin-Chan standards.
    • This also lead to very unique levels that had concepts that is not present in many platformers but this game in general is very unique for a 2D platformer.
  3. The graphics are amazing for it's time, even for a 2004 GBA game and it's a huge improvement over the previous games released before, in fact the 2D here is way more detailled than in the Kid Station game released for the PS1.
    • The sprites are absolutely amazing and are very faithful to the show animation, even goes as far as looking that they came from the show, in addition they perfectly match the art style of the show and had some great details.
      • Aside from Shinnosuke himself, everyone had a very accurate appearance to their show/manga counterpart, such as Shinnosuke parents and some of his friends that appear too.
    • The color palette is very well done too, being very colorful and had ton of visually appealing colors that help the backgrounds and the sprites for looking much better, it is even better in the DS remake too.
    • In addition, the sequel of this game titled Densetsu o Yobu Omake no Miyako Shukkugaan! rehash those graphics and manage to make them look somehow better than this game, which could potentially make both of them some of the best looking GBA games ever released.
  4. Lot of varied costumes for Shinnosuke are present and are required for beating some stages or to progress through the adventure, those include:
    • Action Mask: A costume that specializes in attack, allowing the use of a double jump, "Action Beam," an "Action Kick" that can be performed while jumping, and an "Action Rolling Thunder" that can be unleashed from a double jump.
    • Monkey: You can do wall jumps in a triple jump manner to climb to high places, or hang from vines to move around.
    • Frog: Your jumping power will increase, and you can jump continuously while holding down the jump button. You can also hang from frog-shaped hooks by hooking your tongue on them.
    • Chicken: They can glide by hovering, and attack by pecking with their beaks or laying eggs. It seems that it's taboo to point out that they're male birds and yet they lay eggs...
    • Bee: By repeatedly pressing the jump button until the special gauge runs out, you can fly freely in the sky. However, in exchange, you can no longer perform normal jumps or stomp attacks. In addition, you can attack by stabbing enemies with the needle on your butt.
  5. The soundtrack as usual with the Shin-Chan games is very good, as it had lot of catchy tunes and they are fitting for every stages that you play, even better some musics are epic, and some peoples might even want to get the ost on their phones to listen to it.
  6. In fact even Shinnosuke family are here to help Shinnosuke in his adventure, and they had ton of abilities.
    • Hiroshi:
      • Launcher: By jumping and riding on it, it will launch Shinnosuke high into the air.
      • Sock Bomb: Attacks enemies by throwing strong-smelling socks at them.
      • Get It: Stops enemy movement by dressing up in eerie women's clothing.
      • Hiroshi Sun: Transform into Hiroshi SUN and attack all enemies on the screen.
    • Misae:
      • Hip Drop: Jump and fall on your butt to destroy certain boxes and floors.
      • Fist: Delivers a punch to an enemy close to Shinnosuke.
      • Coughing Suit: Wearing a sekitori suit, he charges forward and launches an attack.
      • Magical Girl Misarin: She transforms into the magical girl Misarin and completely restores Shinnosuke's stamina.
    • Himawari:
      • Crawl: She will crawl to get items that are at the end of a narrow gap.
      • Hot Spring Warrior: Transforms into a hot spring warrior and launches a forward charging attack.
      • Butterfly: Cosplaying as a butterfly, she pulls out Shinnosuke who has fallen into a hole.
    • Shiro:
      • Hole Digging: When used on glowing ground, he will dig up an item there.
      • Bite: Shinnosuke bites one enemy close to him, dealing damage and immobilizing them.
      • Cotton Candy: It curls up and flies around the screen, dealing damage to any enemies it hits.
  7. The dialogues are still pretty funny, and ard faithful to the show humors, such as when Shin Chan said that his guide of Cinemaland was two pretty girls and that his mom tell him to stop saying dumb stuffs, and plenty of other things.q
  8. The DS remake had some improvement over the original GBA version, such as:
    • It had fully voiced voice acting in the cutscenes, which is great for a DS game especially considering the limitation, and even better, the voice acting is exactly like the show, and it sound very clean for a DS game.
    • In the GBA version, you could only quit in the middle of a stage of a game you had already completed, but in this version you can quit in the middle of a stage of a game you had not completed.
      • However, please note that if you leave midway and then re-enter the same work, you will start from the beginning of that stage, rather than from the beginning of the scene you left.
    • It had even better graphics thank to being more detailled, those improvement can be seen in some of the sprites who are slightly more detailled and the color palette that is even better.
    • It had a bit more levels than in the original GBA version, since it is based on some of the scenes seen in the Shin-Chan movies that were released at that time, at such it is based on the 15th and 16th movies instead of just the 11th one.
    • It is now possible to save mid-game, as in the GBA version, you could not save until you cleared a stage in the game, but in this game you can save mid-game after clearing each scene.
  9. Absolutely tight and responsive controls as usual with Inti Create games, as here once again Shinnosuke always respond to your commands and he is never ever unresponsive or even slippery at any times, also when you stop using the d-pad, he stop to move immediatly, showing how well programmed this game is.
  10. The bosses themself are just as good as the game itself and is the first time we ever see any bosses in a Shin-Chan game, even better those are quite unique and some of them can be challenging at times.
  11. For the first time ever, they released a Shin-Chan game outside Japan, although it was only released in Spain and nowhere else unfortunately.
  12. The plot twist where the Cinemaland director actually revealed that he was a bad guy and did this to keep Shinnosuke family from getting home was truly amazing especially that before that he was a kind old man, and he perfectly played his game overall.
  13. Balanced difficulty, while the game may appear to be way too easy, it can still had it's moments of being a challenging game, howewer you can still found more challenging games than this on the GBA.
  14. While the game is rather short, it had ton of replay values mainly because there's a lot of collectibles which are fun to collect and it form a collection where you can watch it in the DS remake, and in a similar vein to Pac-Man World 2, it is the main reason that you will replay this game again for finding all of the cards, or even for simply enjoying the game once again.
  15. In fact this game is actually important to the Shin-Chan video game series because this game was what was the actual formula for most of the future Shin-Chan games on DS and 3DS, howewer it wasn't keep for most of the Switch games.
    • In fact it even received a direct sequel on the GBA.
  16. It is considered by many to be the best Shin-Chan game due to all of it's qualities, especially considering how much of an improvement it is over the Game Boy games (which were decent but a bit lacking, especially in term of contents).

Bad Qualities

  1. While it's true that it's aimed at kids, players who are somewhat accustomed to action games find the difficulty level too easy. Even when it's "difficult," there aren't many things that will get you stuck.
    • Furthermore, there is no limit to the number of times you can continue after a game over, and the point at which you can resume continuing is from the beginning of the scene where the game over occurred, which adds to the problem.
      • However, if you fall into a hole, you will die instantly unless you have released the Sunflower Butterfly beforehand *3 , so that doesn't mean there won't be any difficulties on your first try.
    • Another major factor is that the game is generally easy, regardless of the two difficulty settings available.
    • The game is based on stamina, and every time you collect 100 Chocobi your life limit (up to 10) increases and your stamina is fully restored. Your remaining lives are also unconditionally replenished to the initial value of 3 if you complete the game or leave the game.
      • In addition, no matter what attack you receive, the damage you take is fixed at 1 per attack, and every time you make a mistake, the Chocobi on the stage will revive, so combined with the fact that you have infinite continues, your health limit will increase rapidly as you keep repeating the game.
  2. The game is very short for both the GBA and DS versions, especially the GBA version since that one can be finished in only 2 hours.
    • As for the DS remake, it is slightly longer because of the new levels being added but it still short nonetheless since it can be beaten in 5 hours.
  3. While the costumes are great, they still had a few flaws.
    • In terms of everyday use, Action Kamen is extremely versatile.
      • You can use the action beam for long-distance attacks and double jump, and it doesn't have any quirks, so you'll be fine wearing this costume in most situations.
    • Each costume other than the bee and chicken has its own role, and there are no costumes whose purpose is unclear, but the frog and monkey are a little difficult to use because they cannot double jump and have other somewhat quirky abilities. For that reason, the frog and monkey tend to appear less often unless they are needed to progress or are used to obtain gold cards or collection cards.
    • By the way, the regular Shinnosuke is not unusual, but as a means of attack, the kancho can only be used from behind an adult human enemy, and is completely useless in other situations, so it is half-baked.
      • Therefore, unless you need to climb pillars or press elevator buttons, there is little reason to go in your regular clothes.
  4. While it is a neat idea, the collection images are kind of lazy, because of those reasons:
    • The cards in the collection are basically made up of the illustrations seen in the demo section, and even if you complete the collection it's merely self-satisfaction, with no bonuses, so collecting cards has little appeal.
    • If there were some special reward for completing the collection, or some other unique feature about each card, collecting the cards could become an addictive experience, but since there is nothing like that, there's just not much motivation to collect them.
  5. The DS version had this problem of taking advantage of the fact that it is a DS, the game employs an interface that makes use of the touch screen on the lower screen, and the mini-games also make use of the lower screen, in which this game wasn't designed with this in mind.
    • However, some mini-games require a lot of scratching, and due to the nature of the mini-games, it can be difficult to control the amount of scratching. Therefore, if you play without a liquid crystal protective film, there is a possibility that the lower screen will get scratched.
  6. In the GBA version, you cannot save in a stage and you rather must complete a stage to save, which is tedious.

Reception

The game was met with extremely positive reviews and is considered to be one of the best Shin-Chan game to date, it got praised for it's visual, gameplay and the fact that it focus on movies adventures but it got criticized for the short length.
