Plot

An explosion in a New York tunnel causes both sides to collapse trapping people inside. It's up to one man to help the people find their way to safety.

Good Qualities

  1. The idea of people trapped in a tunnel on the verge of death after a catastrophe is pretty interesting.
  2. It's a good yet Die Hard and Poseidon Adventure style film with a dramatic storyline.
  3. Fantastic soundtrack that was composed by Randy Edelman.
  4. Decent acting, especially from Sylvester Stallone, Amy Brenneman and Stan Shaw.
  5. Great special effects, especially the set designs and the explosions.
  6. Well done and intense action scenes, such as the flooding, the scene with Kit climbing down the fan shaft, the tunnel explosion, and the opening car chase.
  7. Good direction from Rob Cohen.

Bad Qualities

  1. Most of the supporting cast are a mixed bag of characters. Who range from tolerable to insufferable and annoying.
  2. It can be pretty slow paced at times.

Trivia

  • One reason to why Sylvester Stallone agreed to acting in this film was to help him overcome his fear of confined spaces. He agreed to appear in Cliffhanger (1993) to help him conquer his fear of heights.
  • Lead character Kit Laura played by Sylvester Stallone appears in rescue equipment similar to Chris Redfield's S.T.A.R.S. gear from Resident Evil. Both the first Resident Evil game and this film were released in 1996 only a few months apart.
  • The tunnel sequences were filmed in Rome's Cinecitta Studios, on a set a third of a mile long. Cinecitta was chosen as the main studio set because of its enormous floodable sound stages.
  • The explosion that seals both ends of the tunnel, before Kit Laura enters, was actually a miniature model.
