Dead Or Alive Ultimate is a compilation fighting game developed by Team Ninja and published by Tecmo. It includes a enhanced port of the Saturn version of Dead Or Alive as well as a remake of Dead Or Alive 2 featuring a large amount of content to unlock and explore.

Why It is Ultimate

  1. For the first time. US and European players can play the Sega Saturn version of the first Dead Or Alive 1 which is considered to be Itagaki's favorite version.
  2. The graphics in Ultimate 2 are extremely beautiful and are almost close to looking like an early Xbox 360 game which is also compatible to play on and the best thing is that it doesn't affect the framerate thanks to the hardware capabilities of the Xbox.
  3. You can play online unlike 3 as well as playing 1 online, yes, you heard that right you can play an enhanced version of the Saturn version of an 1996 arcade game online without any emulation modifications.
  4. Many costumes that are not seen in the previous versions are added and some of them are to celebrate the Xbox's existence for being the most powerful six gen console.
  5. If you have a DOA 3 or DOAXBV save you can unlock Hitomi who debuted in Dead Or Alive 3 (You'll have to play as Ein on default settings to unlock her).
  6. A new introduction prologue prior to the events of the first game and how Kasumi and Ayane's relationship changed as well as Raidou attempting to use his power for evil and how he became what he is now.
  7. Many extras to unlock in Ultimate 2 such as the G4 video, the booster content for 3 and an image collection (which is taken from DOAXBV instead of showing official artwork from DOA 2).
  8. Ultimate 2 is rebalanced from the original and the gameplay is even smoother than the previous releases.
  9. The US & European cover has a really cool colorful style and also shows the most popular characters in the series.

Bad Qualities

  1. Aside from adding more costumes and online play. Ultimate 1 is the same as the Saturn version and barely any improvements were made.
  2. Unlocking everything in Ultimate 2 can be a pain as you'll have to either be lucky to play many rounds in Survival Mode or keep switching difficulty levels from easiest to hardest.
  3. The Japanese cover is quite bland as it just shows Kasumi standing peacefully in the Demon's Church stage.

Trivia

  • As said in WIU#1, Itagaki choose the Saturn version over the PS1 version because it was his most preferred and favorite version
  • This was the last Dead or Alive game to feature the analog button setting, which utilizes a controller's pressure sensitive analog face buttons. On future systems' controllers, analog face buttons are replaced with digital ones that are non-pressure sensitive. When playing Dead or Alive 2 Ultimate on later systems, the analog button setting is rendered useless.
