Derision is a season 5 episode of the series, Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug & Cat Noir. Based on the series production order specifically, "Derision" is the 14th written and produced episode of Season 5. It is also the 118th written and produced episode of the series, overall.
Plot/Sypnosis
Just as it seems like Marinette is finally about to have a normal date with Adrien, she strangely starts suffering from repeated panic attacks. She doesn't understand why, and it's starting to jeopardize her relationship with the one she loves. And it creates an emotional situation that could make her the perfect target for Monarch! What if the answer to her problems lay in her past? Back when Marinette wasn't the Marinette we know today...
Why We Should Put Spiders In Kim's Locker Instead
- First of all, Kim went from a jokester, goofy and silly to cruel and mean as himself and with a twisted sense of humor as Dark Humor. What doesn't help is that both Kim and Chloe made Marinette have PTSD because of that and almost made her drown! To make things worse, is that Chloe tried to get Socqueline expelled due her (Socqueline) breaking her (Chloe's) phone, to prevent Chloe from humiliating Marinette, and Chloe would play the "mayor's daughter" card to get Socqueline suspended for the rest of the year, which isn't as severe as expulsion, but it's still very cruel nonetheless.
- Marinette’s PTSD is also portrayed inaccurately here as she does not show all the symptoms, she doesn’t have a recurrent nightmares and is traumatized by the public pool (in fact, she was able to visit this location in previous episodes without any trouble). In fact, PTSD is a terrible excuse for her to stalk Adrien. YouTuber and cartoon critic, Cyrus the Great sums up what is wrong with this perfectly. (Go to 1:03:08 where he explains it in great detail)
- Marinette, despite her being no better, actually admitted that she stalked Adrien without him knowing, which shows how horribly she's been flanderized!!!
- To add salt to injury: Socqueline while likable only appears 3 (4 in a flashback if that counts) times in season 5 and then never again after that. And as stated in WWSPSIKLI#1, Kim was flanderized into a cruel, mean, twisted, and idiotic jerk. What doesn't help is that he doesn't have any comeuppance for his actions and gets off scot-free, making him a Karma Houdini, and while he apologizes, that doesn't justify what he's done in this episode and onwards.
- Horribly executed moral: Always give your classmates hell and manipulate your friends to give a person trauma throughout the day and receive no karma for your actions, and turn into an unlikeable jerk in the process.
- Continuity Error: Kim uses spiders in his prank on Marinette. However, in the season 1 episode "Darkblade", he admits to Marinette that he is afraid of spiders and that's what Chloé used to keep him from running for class representative.
- What Kim says is that Chloé "threatened to tell everyone I'm afraid of spiders." Whether Kim is indeed afraid of spiders is not relevant, only that people thinking it's true will embarrass Kim.
- However, it's possible that his fear of spiders may have been formed in between, as the prank was done when he was an eighth grader and he tried to run for a class representative during his ninth grade year.
- The animation, while decent for the most part, has some animation errors, which shows how the show's decline has accelerated up to 11. And this episode has some errors in general.
- Monarch's face masks are miscolored blue throughout the episode.
- When Ondine destroys the boats, the mouth of the blonde-haired girl is strangely shaped.
- When Ladybug and Cat Noir were defending civilians, one of the mother's eyes was briefly yellow instead of brown.
- When Socqueline kicks Chloé's phone, her eyes are white.
- In one of the scenes where Ladybug is chasing Cat Noir, trying to get Dark Humor to follow her, her suit is a mix of her normal and upgraded suit. None of the sections of it are black, but she's got her new hairstyle and the ladybug zipper.
- In the flashback some scene in the flashback the rubber band that ties Marinette's bun can be seen in some scenes and some scenes it just disappears.
- After the scene when Monarch transferred Xuppu to Kim, his hand appeared out of nowhere.
- When Ladybug is figuring out how to use the Lucky Charm and sees the arrow that Dark Humor had shot, the arrow disappears in the last frame.
- After Marinette enters the science classroom after coming back from the Principal's office, Nathaniel sits next to a brown-haired boy. After Marinette sits on the stool though, Nathaniel is sat next to a red-haired boy.
- The whole flashback scene feels like it drags on for so long that it almost makes it feel like a filler episode.
- There are many plot holes in this episode:
- Why was Marinette treated like a butt-monkey in this episode? Hell, even if she were flanderized she doesn't deserve to be put through total hell or trauma!
- Also, how come Marinette was in love with Kim before being in love with Adrien?
- Toilet humor: In the middle of the episode, there was literal toilet humor in Miraculous of all shows, which shows how hard the show declined in quality throughout the years.
- Overall, this is one of the worst episodes in the show and even beating Qilin despite the latter being no better. The flanderizations have gotten worse, the writing has become below average/mediocre, and there is many animation errors in season 3-5.
Redeeming Qualities
- The post-ending scene where Adrien calls out Chloe for what she did to Marinette is satisfying.
- The animation is still good as usual. Assemblage Entertainment also did an okay job animating this episode despite being some animation errors in the episode, they are still okay at best, but they have potential in the future.
- The voice acting is still decent.
- The jokes, while stale and boring are slightly funny.
- Socqueline's a likable and sympathetic character, due to trying protect Marinette from Chloe which was a bold move considering that Chloe is a twit sometimes.
- Marinette is still likeable as usual, despite her being an idiot in this episode, as she isn't flanderized like she usually is.
- Odine at least tried to talk some sense into Kim, but he doesn't listen anyway.
