Plot

Yui Komori, the adopted daughter of a priest is sent to live in a house while her father is overseas. However, to her horror, she realizes she's now the guest and intended sacrificial bride of the six sadistic Sakamaki brothers who are all vampires The first season is based off the first game, Haunted Dark Bridal. The second season follows the sequel More Blood More, where she is kidnapped by the Mukami Brothers.

Why It Sucks (No Pun Intended)

Note: Most of the pointers apply to the anime adaptation.

  1. No character development whatsoever. For instance, in Episode 6, Kanato tries to kill Yui and turn her into a wax figure. However, by Episode 12, he suddenly plays a role in saving her life, with no build up to his character to make it work.
  2. Yui herself is so bland and generic; she's regarded as even worse than Bella Swan. Yes, that Bella Swan.
    • She does nothing in the anime whatsoever. She never even tried defending or standing up for herself. Instead, she allows them to hurt and harass her.
  3. No real plot happens until around Episode 7.
  4. The show is so formulaic and predictable, that the YouTube channel, Anime America, made a drinking game about it.
  5. The Sakamakis often abuse and treat Yui horribly. Then again, they're vampires and very sadistic and insane, but they don't have to be like that all of the time.
  6. The animation at times is just incredibly stilted with literally being five frames of a single character opening their mouth being putted around the screen.
  7. The English dub make the show even worse. Kanato is depicted as a creepy psychotic manchild, and the Japanese VA shows that well with him while the English VA makes him sound like a soft spoken and handsome young man. Meanwhile, Laito's Japanese VA makes him sound like a playful and flirtatious vampire while his English VA makes him sound more menacing.
  8. The second season ends on a cliffhanger where the Mukamis and Sakamakis join forces to protect Yui from the Founders, and it just ends right there.
  9. Shu is completely useless in the show. The only time he ever does anything shocking is when he stands up.
  10. Extremely poor world-building that's just consisted in the vampires' house and nothing else.
  11. Very pointless moments that exist just for padding or getting Yui bit. For instance, in the second season, Kou Mukami gives Yui a cherry tomato from his garden and then sucks her blood.

Redeeming Qualities

  1. The original games and manga are considered superior to the anime.
  2. The character designs are great as the vampires have handsome designs.
    • Yui's design is also adorable.
  3. As sadistic as they are towards Yui, the Sakamakis have a few "pet the dog" moments with her as well:
    • Kanato destroyed his own teddy to get Cordelia's ashes to use in a formula to destroy his evil mother for good.
    • Subaru gave Yui a silver knife to defend herself.
    • Reji made a potion that destroyed Cordelia forever, allowing Yui to get her body back.
    • Laito thankfully killed Richter and destroyed Cordelia's dress ensuring his evil mother could never revive again.
    • Ayato saved her from drowning (second one is the only one that counts), caught her after she stabbed herself and dealt a heavy wound on Richter, helped get Reji's formula into her body by kissing her, saved her during a car crash, rescued her from the Mukumis, and agreed to a truce with them to keep Yui safe from the founders.
  4. Like the games, Ayato and Yui seem to be canon.
  5. Yui is given a glimpse into the childhood of the Sakamaki Brothers; let's just say, anyone with a childhood like that won't turn up sane.
  6. The opening song, MR. SADISTIC NIGHT performed by some of the characters in the anime, is really good.

Reception

Anime America regards this as the worst anime of 2013. PhantomStrider considers it the 4th worst anime of all time. WatchMojo ranked this at #1 on their Top 10 WORST Anime Harem of All Time. In spite of this, the show has a fanbase likely due to the animation and how the vampires look. Some fans are even hoping for Season 3. However, fans of the manga and games agree the anime doesn't do either any justice. It's considered to be much better liked in Japan though.

On MyAnimeList, it currently holds a rating of 5.2/10.
