The book was named a New York Times bestseller, among other awards and praise. Plot

Being a kid can stink. And no one knows this better than Greg Heffley, who finds himself thrust into high school where undersized weaklings share the hallways with kids who are taller, meaner, and already shaving. Luckily Greg has his best friend and sidekick, Rowley. But when Rowley's popularity starts to rise, it kicks off a chain of events that will test their friendship hilariously.

Why It's 0% Wimpy, And 100% Rich And Famous

  1. Lots of great references such as "C is for cookie and cookie is for me!" from Sesame Street along with the Superman scene and many other great references from the book.
  2. Some funny moments such as the cheese touch and the morons' scene.
  3. A little scene of Greg being nice to Rowley.
  4. Great characters such as Fregley, Rowley, Greg's family, Jeffery, and so much more along with a ton of good new characters in the sequel books.
    • Fregley is weird in a very humorous way, such as when he begs to go pee by saying "juice".
    • Manny, Greg's baby brother, also has some very funny moments, such as when he drew on Greg's bedroom door and his parents found it cute among other funny memories with him.
    • Greg himself is a pretty nice and charming character who is also a great writer and decent artist with a good sense of humor, such as when he wrote "facts" about the moose for his homework and so on.
  5. It even spawned the amazing 2010 live-action movie adaptation, along with spawned 3 sequels, which are based on Rodrick Rules, Dog Days, and The Long Haul (despite the latter being so bad it killed the live-action film series) and even the 2021 animated reboot of the same name on Disney+.
  6. Greg always gets himself into crazy and unpredictable adventures, such as when he camped outside a video game store just to enter a tournament.
  7. Great lessons such as having you willing to give yourself up for people you love.
  8. "Zoo-Wee Mama!"
  9. The fact the book is in all black and white means that the book is helpful for color-blind people.
  10. The online version of the book is the definitive way to read it.
  11. This is not a diary, it’s a journal.

Wimpy Qualities

  1. A couple of bland jokes that aren't very funny.
  2. Manny, Greg's parents, some female characters, Rodrick, and Greg himself can be unlikable at times.
  3. Some names can sound weird, or hard to pronounce. For example, Creighton.
  4. Many scenes from the online book were cut in the book version, making it 226 pages compared to the 1276 pages of the online version.

Trivia

  1. The book was originally going to be made for adults (to remind them about their childhood), but Kinney's publisher suggested that it be made for kids.
