Dig Dug II is an action puzzle game developed and published by Namco. This is a sequel to Dig Dug yet it takes place on a different setting.

Why It's A Paradise

  1. The setting does not take place underground but it instead takes place on an island yet on the land. The change of setting was different so that way players can experience Dig Dug differently.
  2. Instead of having to dig to the ground, the camera is now in an overhead view since you're at an island. Instead of digging, you now have a jackhammer to create some faults that can collapse the island if they are connected. Lots of fun when you break lands.
  3. They are different ways to kill Pookas and Fygars. As usual, you can pump them up thus inflating them until they explode. Another way of killing the enemies is by the destruction which is the island tearing as mentioned above which can deal lots of damage depending on how much land you destroy. When only one, two, or three (later rounds for the latter) enemies are remaining they get to jump in the water thus killing themselves.
  4. The graphics are still as colorful and lively as they were in the previous game just in a nostalgic 8-Bit way. Too simple!
  5. The music that plays during the game is quite catchy. It's very frantic at the beginning yet it becomes fast-paced when time is running out.
  6. Once three pieces of land have been cut off an island, a bonus vegetable will appear somewhere on what remains of the island, which can be eaten for extra points. The veggies consist of turnips, mushrooms, eggplants, tomatoes, watermelons, grapes, bananas, corn, pineapples, and cocktails.
  7. Every level has a different island format which lets the players attempt to strategize what would be the best way to get the job done without hesitation. Not to mention that it's lots of fun having to deal with different islands.
  8. Pookas and Fygars cannot cross cracks unless they are ghosts. Even if you cannot necessarily use a peg to create a landslide, you can still use them to create cracks in the ground and generally make it more difficult for enemies to get around.

Bad Qualities

  1. The jackhammer noise Taizo makes can be a bit annoying for some due to how loud it is.
  2. Sometimes it's really easy to mess up if you were to destroy certain parts of the land because depending on your actions, you might accidentally kill yourself if you are standing on the piece of land that is getting destroyed thus killing you. The same can apply to using the pump yet you still mess up.
  3. Lack of free movement compared to the original.
  4. The title is misleading because despite being called Dig Dug II, there is not much digging.

Reception

Dig Dug II wasn't really as popular as the original Dig Dug yet it still got lukewarm reviews later on with Nintendo Live giving the game a 6/10. The title's departure from the original's maze-chase gameplay, its time of release, and the lack of the original's free movement is believed to have attributed to its failure.
