Dillon's Rolling Western: The Last Ranger is a Tower Defense Action game developed by Vanpool and was released on the E-Shop on April 10, 2013 in Japan, with the United States release coming a day later.
It is the second game in the Dillon's Rolling Western franchise.
A sequel and reboot called Dillon's Dead-Heat Breakers would release 5 years later.
Why The Red Flash Is Still Rolling
- It is a upgrade over the previous game, as now every character in the game has a 3D model, the saloon is a exploreable area, and there's more features than the original game.
- Great graphics that are a upgrade from the original, many of the characters have high-poly models with movable eyes.
- The soundtrack is remastered from the previous game, sounding very good.
- Much like the previous game, Dillon can find hidden treasure chests that has ores for extra money and heart pieces for extra health.
- Dillon's gear can be upgraded as soon you unlock the next upgrade, the upgraded gear will allow Dillon to be stronger and defeat the grocks easily. Although enough uses will destroy the gear.
- Additionally much like the previous game the game has mines where Dillon can mine for ores for extra money.
- This game introduces Sal's Treasure Hunt, which gives you access to the mines where you can find valuable ores to earn extra money.
- New features were added such as having allies, Gallo, Boone, and Nomad who have different strengths and bonuses if they gather a certain item.
- Gallo is best at collecting money.
- Boone is best at collecting scruffles, as he can also collect sap bugs for extra money, he can also recharge his health by sleeping.
- Nomad is best at shooting at the grocks, as his weapon is the most powerful.
- The story is much longer than the original game, along the way you meet new characters and meet new allies that will help you on your adventure.
- At the end of the story missions where you meet your allies, you will have a duel in the Wild West.
- Once you beat the game, not only you will get the model viewer like the previous game, you will also get a jukebox mode that allows you to listen to the soundtrack from the game.
Bad Qualities
- The sequel shares certain problems from the original.
- The touch-screen control scheme from the previous game returns although being slightly improved for right-handed players, and there's now a left-handed control scheme.
- Like the previous game, you need to have a certain number of stars in order to unlock the levels, which requires you to replay the missions constantly or buy stars from Otis.
- Very long prep times, even if you gathered mostly everything in the area. Because of the allies also gathering certain items, the gathering times become very short and this results in the player having to wait long periods of time just to start the defense stage.
- Sadly, not many of the mayors from the original game (Only Governor Cappy returns) return or get mentioned at all. The 6 story missions where you meet your allies have mouse mayors that are reskinned.
- This game introduces the train, in which appears during the last day during the missions (Not the ones where you meet your allies), not only you need to gather ores needed for the train tracks, you have to defend the train, the tracks and the main building of the village all at the same time, which makes the defensive parts of the game harder.
- In fact, during the final mission. You need to defeat the final boss Grock, defend the train, the tracks, and the main village all at the same time. Which makes the game even harder than before.
- Like the previous game, because of the game being exclusive to the E-Shop, as of 2023 when Nintendo shutdown the E-Shop, the game can no longer be obtained legally.
