Dirty Harry is a 1990 video game on the Nintendo Entertainment System. It was published by Mindscape and developed by Gray Matter Inc. The game is loosely based on the Dirty Harry movie franchise, which stars Clint Eastwood as Harry Callahan.
Why It Doesn't Make Your Day
- It has subpar graphics for a late 1990 game. For example, the main character doesn't look anything like Harry Callahan.
- The controls are not only complicated, but it is also delayed as well. Sometimes, climbing ladders can be an ordeal due to delayed controls.
- Your health bar and lives are only visible when you pause the game. This is a huge problem when the game is extremely difficult and it's hard to determine how much damage they do to you.
- It also suffers from choppy frame animation. Your character's animation feels unpolished because of how floaty he moves.
- It is also an extremely short game, only going through three levels the whole game.
- The game suffers from being too difficult for its own good. Some enemies are bulletproof, others take way too much punishment. It's also impossible to tell which ones are which without trial and error.
- Moreover, enemies are everywhere and will swarm you. A perfect example are the gunmen in the first and last stages, because they will shoot at you with near precise shots.
- Extremely poor grasp of the source of origin. Players will fight uninspired enemies which have nothing to do with the films, such as rats, roaches and snakes.
- One innocent-looking door in the first level leads to a dead-end room that has graffiti on the wall saying "HA HA HA", as if the developers were mocking you. Your only chance of getting out of this room is to reset out of the game.
- If you die and get hit during the death animation, you lose an additional life.
- The first level boss would be a more interesting one, if it weren't for the unintuitive way of defeating him. You have to take advantage of the rising sewer water to electrocute him. It's possible for an impatient player to fry him and accidentally fall in the water and die because of how poor the controls are.
- The ending only consists of Harry Callahan and the main villain with a garbled soundbyte. For everything the player had to go through, it feels extremely disappointing.
- The music is on par with AOL dial-up tones.
Redeeming Qualities
- It does contain two of Harry Callahan's famous quotes, albeit the quality is tinny.
- You do get several continues.
- Moreover, the game has a password system, which is nice for a difficult game like this.
