Summary

After running over a dog, Brian teaches a lesson about the importance of the life of other animals. Meanwhile Lois hires Consuela, a Hispanic maid, to take care of the house.

Why It Should Be Gone

  1. The episode is just cruel and mean-spirited to Brian, who for once, is likable, except for his ego inflating for his book.
    • When he confesses he ran over another dog, Joe and the Griffins all laugh, saying that no one cares if a dog or any other animal is killed, especially by another animal, which is just awful.
  2. Some scenes are very disturbing and gruesome.
    • Brian accidentally running over the dog, causing it to be in half is just gruesome to see.
    • There is a scene of a dog scratching a door to the point where its' bones are seen. There is also a scene where some scientists put lipstick on a rabbit and shoot it’s head off.
    • There is also a scene where a cow gives birth to another cow, and that cow gets put into a shredder and gets turned into meat for burgers. And a fat family eats the burgers.
    • The scene of Brian letting a dog of its leash, only to attack & kill a smaller dog and a cop, and getting shot by two other cops, is also very graphic, even for Family Guy standards.
  3. Quahog's residents are way stupider and even more cruel than usual.
    • After Brian mentions that some countries eat dogs, Quahog starts to want to eat Brian.
  4. The Griffins being upset over Brian's death comes out as hypocritical, as they never cared about other dogs getting killed. It is justified to them, because Brian was more of a family member than a pet.
  5. The Griffins, Joe and the Quahog residents never apologize to Brian for their actions.

Redeeming Qualities

  1. The plot with Consuela is kind of funny.
  2. While forced, the final scene was nice to see that the Griffins do care about Brian.
  3. Brian and Stewie are likable, and Brian isn’t flanderized like he usually is.
  4. The Peter/PETA argument.

Reception

  • The episode got mixed-positive reviews, as many people liked the Consuela plot, and some also thought the main plot was good.
  • Dog Gone won a Genesis Award for television comedy.
  • However, many people have started to give the episode criticism, particularly for the fact of Brian being treated horribly for most of the episode, and some of the gory scenes.
  • The episode has a 7.5/10 on IMDb.
