Doki Doki Mario Club is the sixth episode of the eighth season of SMG4.
Synopsis
It's Valentines Day in the Mushroom Kingdom, and everyone has a date... except for poor Fishy Boopkins, who's only able to "date" his favorite girl in an anime dating game, Saiko. That all changes when a chance encounter allows him to bring her to life, but while things go swimmingly at first, Saiko's jealous tendencies soon start causing problems...
Why It's Not Okie Dokie and Should've Stopped
- To start with, this episode marks the very beginning of SMG4's fall fom grace. It's introduced to a new trend involving the series creating new original female characters that has not been stopping to this day.
- It was a pretty problematic way of introducing Saiko to the cast because she constantly causes trouble and almost tries to kill Mario, Luigi, SMG4, and Boopkins. Even if she did redeem herself by Luigi's Lesson, many old SMG4 may still hate or not like her like the other OC's.
- Some scenes are made for filler such as Boopkins alongside with Lemmy Koopa and Francis protesting outside the anime studio in order to bring their waifus alive.
- The things that Saiko do for the most of the time are usually unfunny, annoying and very mean-spirited like burning all of Boopkins' waifus and destroying Luigi's phone because he didn't spend time with her. These traits unfortunately will stay with her during the downfall of the series.
- In the end of this episode the viewer is still expected to sympathize with Saiko because she was ignored in her video game for many years. However due to the poor execution it makes it hard for the viewer to feel sorry for her.
- The title implies that this episode will be a "Doki Doki Literature Club!" parody. However, aside from the beginning part there isn't anything that feels like a parody of the said game which means that the title is misleading. It doesn't help that, at the time the episode came out, it couldn't be a straight-up DDLC parody because no Garry's Mod models of the girls (particularly Monika, who Saiko was clearly based on) had been made yet (which could be a possible reason why Saiko was created in the first place).
- SMG4 could've just waited until the models or ragdolls were published to Steam Workshop, so this episode would've been made later. It also would've been an If Mario Was In... episode as well.
- Starting from this episode the music credits was removed in favor of the perk badges, thus leaving SMG4 fans back on square one where they have to look for the tracks themselves, just like in seasons 1-6a.
- Because of this, this whole episode was the reason why the series went through it's major seasonal rot in the first place, and is still getting more and more worse as of now.
Okie Dokie Qualities
- The famous quote: Stop it, this is not okie dokie!
- The part with Toad was pretty funny.
- Mario, Luigi, SMG4, Toad and Boopkins are likable characters
- The ending, despite being forced was actually emotional.
- It still debuted a new character, Saiko, who got better after Luigi's Lesson, even if she did, she can still be unlikable.
Reception
Despite not receiving as much as backlash as Mario Joins the Circus and Boys vs Girls, this episode was widely considered to be the weakest episode of season 8 by the fans.
