Doodle Toons was an animated web series created by the popular Irish YouTuber cartoonlover98, a.k.a. Jack. The series follows in the footsteps of various cartoons of the 50's and 60's, with its cartoon violence, humor, and other aspects which are taken from such cartoons.
Why There's Not Another One To Take Its Place, Baby Face
- Besides the voice acting and music (the latter of which was taken from other cartoons), the show was made almost entirely by Jack. He is so impressive when it comes to making a cartoon, especially when it's one of TV-quality.
- The animation is fluid and full of character, and the fact it was animated single-handedly by Jack is amazing.
- Additionally, for the first four episodes, each animation frame was drawn on the Nintendo 3DS app Colors 3D!, which explains why most of the episodes are in a 4:3 aspect ratio. "Fast Food Follies" was animated with Toon Boom, and so would "Monkey Business" had the short been complete.
- While most of the humor focuses on generic slapstick gags, they're decent, especially since most of the series was made by one teenager.
- The characters, while being simple cartoon-archetypes, are different enough to stand out a bit. Their cute and simple designs carry a specific charm that actually works.
- Bellybutton, Cruncher, Goldie, Ringo and Pip are especially likable, despite some of them being quite bland and generic.
- The characters got a redesign in 2017, which made them look more unique.
- Besides the pilot, all the episodes are decent, with "The Way The Cruncher Crumbles", "Monkey Business" (despite being unfinished) and "Fast Food Follies" being the best.
- There's also a comic spinoff that also has great jokes.
Bad Qualities
- The show's inconsistent pacing, overuse of funny faces in the expense of actual jokes, and plain character designs kind of make the show a bit worse, but fortunately that's not saying much.
- Some of the characters are unlikable, such as Jellybean and Crumbles.
- The voice acting can sound mediocre at times.
- The pilot "Rabbit For Dinner", is bad and started the series on a sour-note.
- Despite Jack claiming the series would remain available on the Clever Clover Productions YouTube channel, the entire series was removed from public view in 2019 due to Jack personally not liking them anymore. As a result, most of the show's extras are lost or in poor quality. However, the pilot episode through "The Way the Cruncher Crumbles" are still available on the official Vimeo page and several users have reuploaded the series on YouTube.
Trivia
- Despite the animated series ending, the show still lived on through the comics posted to Twitter and Deviantart, before Jack quit both websites.
Reception
As proven with the show's IMDB page, Doodle Toons recieved generally-positive reception from fans, although a review by The Litterbox Critic said the show "was not fun to watch", and gave the show a 3/10.
