Plot
After the Wicked Witch of the West was melted by water, Queen Ozma appointed Dorothy Gale the Princess of Emerald City. With her feet firmly grounded in her ruby slippers, Dorothy tackles her royal duties with enthusiasm, bravery, kindness, and farmgirl feistiness. And whether it's magic, Munchkins, flying monkeys, or her nemesis Wilhelmina, the wicked witch-in-training and niece of the Wicked Witch of the West, Dorothy is ready to track down and put a stop to any problem that comes Oz's way with help from her dog Toto and their friends Scarecrow, Tin Man and Cowardly Lion.
At the start of the second season, the Wizard of Oz ends up back in Oz after getting mixed up in another tornado. Now that he has returned at last, he plots to make himself into a real wizard by getting actual magic powers. When he finds out about the Wicked Witch's spirit being trapped in her crystal ball, he decides to help resurrect her in exchange for powers (not knowing that it takes years to get powers), but it backfires, and Dorothy accidentally resurrects the Wicked Witch without her powers. Regardless of the outcome, this puts the Land of Oz in danger now.
Bad Qualities
- Extremely poor grasp from the source material: Unlike the original movie, this show was really boring.
- Bland character designs like:
- Dorothy Gale
- Scarecrow
- Tin Man
- Lion
- Wilhelmina
- Frank and Lyman
- Queen Ozma
- Some bad episodes like:
- Moody Magic (Wilhelmina was out of character in this episode where she controls Dorothy's emotion with the ring)
- Rules of Attraction
- Boring voice acting. What doesn't help is that Kari Wahlgren provided the voice of Dorothy Gale and does not sound like the late Judy Garland.
- The scenes can be very mean-spirited sometimes.
- The animation, while good, is seemingly stiff.
Good Qualities
- The viewers really liked this show because of there are some good episodes.
- Despite being bland, Dorothy Gale's design is cute, and Scarecrow's, Tin Man's and Lion's designs are decent.
- Decent voice acting, like Kari Wahlgren, Bill Fagerbakke, JP Karliak, Jess Harnell, Steve Blum, Jessica DiCicco, and Grey Griffin.
- There are some likable characters such as:
- Dorothy Gale
- Scarecrow
- Tin Man
- Lion
- Wilhelmina (sometimes in other episodes, despite being a brat)
- Frank and Lyman
- Queen Ozma
- Some good episodes like
- Magical Mandolin
- Toto Unleashed
- Family Matters
- Home Away from Home
- There are some tear-jerking and heartwarming moments, like the scene in "Toto Unleashed" when Dorothy thinks Toto has left her for Wilhelmina.
- The episode, "Family Matters" focuses on the Woozy trying to find a family, since he's the only member of his kind.
- "The Wizard, the Witch, and the Crystal Ball" arc has quite a few.
- In the scene where everyone escapes the crystal ball, Wilhelmina believes her aunt to be dead after everyone escapes the crystal ball. Even though she's their enemy, Dorothy and Ozma try to comfort her.
- The reason for the Wizard’s return to Oz; he was a failure back in the real world, but in Oz, he was a powerful and respected ruler. You can tell how remorseful he truly is for trying to overthrow Ozma and blowing his chance at redemption.
- Pretty much the entirety of "Home Away from Home," especially Dorothy and Wilhemina's genuine hug. Seeing someone as chipper as Dorothy cry will break your heart.
- Dorothy and Ozma's friendship was very cute and heartwarming. Note that this wasn't just something the series staff made to pander to the LGBT representation, it's a slightly exaggerated take on their relationship in Baum's original books.
Trivia
- The series was popular in United Kingdom like on Boomerang (UK version).
- Laraine Newman has a voicing of Wicked Witch is once again, reprising the role from the two Tom and Jerry crossover movies with The Wizard of Oz.
