Down 'n' Dirty is the second half of episode 5 of season 2, and the 29th episode overall of The Powerpuff Girls.

Plot

Buttercup refuses to take a bath after fighting monsters.

Why It Goes Down and Dirty

  1. This is a Buttercup torture episode, with her refusing to take a bath after fighting monsters.
  2. The whole episode focuses on gross-out humor, with the primary victim being Buttercup.
  3. When Buttercup refuses to take a bath, she makes her stinky, which creates a plot hole since she would weaken her white blood cells or die without proper hygiene in real life.
  4. Buttercup never explains why she does not want to take a bath and why she thinks taking one would hurt her.
  5. Plot Hole: In the opening scene, it is never explained how a dust monster launches Buttercup and lands her on the oil.
  6. During the mammoth monster scene, Buttercup kicks him in the eye, which can be very disturbing for children, although this scene was cut, and it is replaced with Blossom and Bubbles getting shocked during UK airings of the episode.
  7. The cyclops' body ripping its arms is very painful to watch.
  8. During the time Buttercup refuses to shower for the second time, she tells the girls and the Professor that if she does not take a bath, she will leave the house, which she did by herself, and it is a mean-spirited thing to do.
  9. There is a mean-spirited scene, the Mayor and the citizens of Townsville are mad at Buttercup for being stinky, form a lynch mob with pitchforks and torches, and chase her because of that. Even the monster in the lake gets mad at her for being stinky.
  10. Despite the ending being satisfying, Buttercup answers back by overreacting "squeaky clean", telling Blossom and Bubbles to "shut up", and stating that she can take a bath if she fights monsters. Fortunately, it got backfired when Blossom tells her that her attitude stinks, even if she is clean.

Redeeming Qualities

  1. Everyone, except Buttercup, is likable in this episode.
  2. The scene where Mrs. Keane pounds the fire alarm, and states that there is a fire drill is quite humorous.
  3. The ending scene is very satisfying, with Buttercup finally taking a bath after her redemption for being stinky.
  4. Good Moral: Always take care of personal hygiene.

Trivia

  • Despite being a bad episode, it and its sister episode, Beat Your Greens, was nominated for the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Animated Program.
