The only transformation this game had made is to improve the GT saga to make it a good game and also a good show.

Dragon Ball GT: Transformation is a side-scroller beat 'em up video game developed by Webfoot Technologies and published by Atari for the Game Boy Advance in North America.

Plot

The story follow the Dragon Ball GT story up to Baby saga.

Why It Can Step Into the Grand Tour! (Grand Qualities)

  1. Making a beat-em-up game for a Dragon Ball series (which is GT here) was an excellent idea, as a Dragon Ball beat-em-up had the potential to be an awesome game, and this game proved it, although it's just decent here.
  2. While it's not as good as Dragon Ball: Advanced Adventure, the gameplay of this game is still fun, and you will not get bored of it. Although it's more boring than Dragon Ball: Advanced Adventure, it's still better than Dragon Ball Z: Taiketsu, which was terrible and overall not fun compared to these two games.
  3. Decent graphics for a Game Boy Advance game, with the sprite work being good and the color palette being great, it's also full of details for the most parts, although it's not as good-looking as Dragon Ball: Advanced Adventure but it's still good.
  4. The length of the game is surprisingly long for a beat-em-up game; the game is even longer than Advanced Adventure as it takes 2h30m to beat it, and the challenging difficulty makes the length of this game longer.
  5. It is a massive improvement over the absolutely abysmal game that was Dragon Ball GT: Final Bout on the PS1, although it's not the same game genre.
  6. The difficulty is more challenging than most Dragon Ball games on the Game Boy Advance, since it's harder and the game is an actual challenge rather than a fake difficulty due to the awful controls (Taiketsu) or too hard due to the awful combat (The Legacy of Goku)
  7. The story is quite faithful to the Dragon Ball GT series, covering up to the Baby saga. Although it's planned to have a sequel that continues the story of the series was planned to make it more complete, it was unfortunately cancelled (see the planned sequel section).
  8. The soundtrack is decent or even straight up good, with most songs being extremely catchy, and some of them are even bangers, although unfortunately it's repetitive and the soundtrack of this game can be forgettable. Despite that, it's still nostalgic to the people who played the game back then and had good memories of it.
  9. The controls are responsive and decent, although they have some flaws (see BQ#2).
  10. The sound effects from the anime series return, and they even sound as close as the anime or as close as Dragon Ball Z or even it's series that this game is based on, which is pretty impressive. Because of this, the combat in this game is very satisfying and more fun than it's would been without them.

Panned Qualities

  1. While the game is fun and pretty decent, it was unfortunately released only in North America, which is probably the reason for the low popularity of the game and possibly behind its minimal success (although for that reason it was probably because of the fact that Dragon Ball GT was forgotten and was disliked).
  2. While the controls are decent and pretty responsive, they can be clunky to control at times, and they can also be unresponsive on some occasions.
  3. The game can be way too hard at times, most notably the third boss fight in the third level of the game, as it's can kill you very easily and it's can kill you in 5 or even 6 hits at times.
    • There is also no continue, so if you die with all of the three characters in a level, then you have to load your save files and retry the entire level over again to the beginning.
    • Another problem is that there is barely any health item that can give you health back; this can make the game even harder than it already is.
    • The levels are also way too long for the most parts, and these can be hard with enemies that don't let you attack them; this makes the levels even harder too.
  4. As said in the last nickpointers of BQ#2, the levels are way too long, which is a pretty cheap way to make a game longer than it should. It's also a cheap way to make the game more difficult.
  5. As said in GQ#8, while the soundtrack is good, it can be forgettable and sometimes extremely repetitive, to the point of being a bit annoying to listen to the music for so long.

Reception

The game received mixed to positive reviews by critics and players alike, with a score of 69/100 on Metacritic, it is considered by most to be a huge improvement over Dragon Ball GT: Final Bout.

Planned Sequel

The game would almost had a sequel titled Dragon Ball GT: Transformation 2 that would be released in 2006 but due to the minimal success of the first game, it was cancelled and a rom is yet to be found, it's would had continue the story we're this game ended.

Trivia

  • In the anime, King Kai tells Goku about the Black Star Dragon Balls, but in the game Dende does.
  • After Goku is transformed back into a kid, he says, "Does this mean I have to go back to school?" when, in the anime and manga, Goku had no formal education, save for Master Roshi teaching him how to read and some basic schooling he received as part of Master Roshi's Training.
  • Although their portraits are available in the portrait gallery, several characters or forms of characters never appear in the game story itself. Those characters/forms are: Infected Super Saiyan Gohan, Infected Super Saiyan Goten and Super Saiyan Trunks. It is speculated that they were originally intended to appear in the game at some point during the development but that they were put aside for one reason or another, such as time constraints.
  • This is one of the only Dragon Ball game that was released exclusively in North America, and so far the only one that was released only in North America for the GBA.

Tips

  1. To make the game easier, just use the Kamehameha for the most parts as it can kill ennemies more easily and make the game easier, especially when playing as Pan.
