Dragon Ball Z (Japanese: ドラゴンボールゼット Hepburn: Doragon Bōru Zetto) is a 1989-1996 Japanese anime television series created by produced by Toei Animation. The European Portuguese dub was made in the dubbing studio Novaga and was aired on SIC Radical, SIC Gold, SIC K, and SIC in Portugal.
Why This Dub Sucks
- The European Portuguese dub was made on top of the French dub (distributed by AB Groupe, who had direct contact with Toei Animation and distributed the French version throughout Europe), whose dub is not good, which ends up having the errors coming from the French dub.
- The opening of the French dub (which has an instrumental in the style of instrumentals of children's songs back then, which is not suitable for a fighting anime like Dragon Ball Z) was also added to this dub.
- The names of the characters were changed, such as Kakarotto became Cachalote, Piccolo became Coraçãozinho de Satã (Satan's Little Heart), Saiyajin became Guerreiros do Espaço (Space Warriors), Muten Roshi became Tartaruga Genial (Great Turtle), Super Saiyajin became Super Guerreiros (Super Warriors) and Mr. Satan became Hercules (due to Piccolo's misnamed), inherited from the French dub.
- Because the dub was made on top of the French dub, it also inherited the terrible censorship of the French dub. By orders of SIC (who aired the anime in Portugal) to the studio that dubbed the anime, Novaga, because of multiple parental complaints about the anime's violence, there was more censorship because of that.
- Because of the low budget on the part of SIC to the studio Novaga that dubbed the anime, only 7-8 voice actors dubbed 115 characters of protagonists, secondary characters, and sidekicks of the anime.
- The screams which the characters does in the dub are forced, who seem instead to take pleasure and ridicule the screams.
- Goku's voice, made by Henrique Feist, is a bit annoying, he looks like a man with an irritating voice.
The Only Redeeming Quality
- It has the "so bad, it's good" way, since the screams and tantrums that many characters do here can be very funny for some people.
Trivia
- The studio that made the European Portuguese dub of Dragon Ball Z, Novaga, for lack of solutions, made the dub have a humorous point of view (without deviating from the anime's plot), have the creative freedom to add Portuguese slang, and jokes, rather than following a literal and serious translation.
- Despite the dub's low quality, the anime became a huge success in Portugal and had a lot of merchandising there.
- The "Vegeta! Olha bem!" line became a meme.
