Dragon Quest (formally known in North America as Dragon Warrior until 2005) is a role-playing game released in 1986 for the Famicom by Enix (Which eventually merged with Square to become Square-Enix). The NES version was later released in 1989. This game was a hit that the sequels followed with Dragon Quest II, III, IV, V, VI, VII, VIII, IX and Dragon Quest Swords.
Plot
A knight who is the descendent of the legendary warrior Edrick is sent out by the king to rescue the princess. Later on the player has to find and kill the evil Dragonlord while the monsters has infested the land.
Why It’s A Warrior
- Despite it's simple story, it has a unique charm to it and features three endings.
- Fantastic music that was composed by Koichi Sugiyama.
- You can level grind in the same spot where the grey knight is.
- This is the first game in the Erdrick Trilogy (Though the second chronologically) which is continued by II and III.
- You easily level grind up to level 30.
- You have to be really strategic in order to make it through the game.
- The artwork was done by the creator of the Dragon Ball franchise.
- The GBC port bundles this game and the second together. The Switch port does the same but also adds the third game.
- There has been many remakes and rereleases to the game.
- It was the game that set the standard for JRPG's along with Final Fantasy.
- According to Shigeru Miyamoto, video game writers were seen as more important after the success of the game.
Bad Qualities
- There is only 1 savepoint in the entire game.
- The game doesn't actually end anymore in the remade versions of the game if you choose to side with the Dragonlord at the end.
- In the Japanese version, if you die, you go back to the Very Beginning of the game. Trough You can continue through password (the North America version has savepoints). Thankfully the remake uses save slots
Reception
This game is the beginning of the Dragon Quest series, one of the most loved JRPG series of all time. This game would receive a sequel and prequel which is Dragon Quest II and III respectively.
Trivia
- There is a reference to Dragon Ball where an epic offers the player "puff-puff". Which is shoving someones breasts in someone's else face.
- Unlike other Japanese game franchises that originated on the NES that had their names changed when they were localized to North America like Mega Man and Castlevania (whose Japanese titles were Rockman and Akumajo Dracula perspectively), Dragon Warrior didn't keep its international name forever as in 2005, Dragon Quest VIII was released, and the international versions began to drop their international name in favor of the Japanese one.
