And this is one of the first GBA port to screw up a very beloved game, but hey at least it's better than EJ2 GBA port.

Earthworm Jim is a 1994 run and gun platform game developed by Shiny Entertainment, featuring an earthworm named Jim, who wears a robotic suit and battles the forces of evil. The game was released for the Sega Genesis and Super Nintendo Entertainment System, before being ported to other consoles later, including a Game Boy Advance version in 2001, in which this page will focus.
Plot
Jim is a normal earthworm, until a special "super suit" falls from the sky and allows him to operate much like a human, with his worm body acting as a head and the suit acting as a body. Jim now must evade the game's many antagonists, who want the suit back.
Bad Qualities
- Unlike many other versions of the game, this one is notable for it's huge number of glitchs that were not present in the original, such as the collision glitchs or even that sometime you die when you're not supposed to, but howewer it still isn't as glitchy as the second game port.
- The controls are quite poor here, as you can seen, even the controls didn't escaped from being terrible because now they are very unresponsive and clunky, and this is also possibly because of how poorly programmed the port is, in other words, they are not groovy.
- The difficulty here had been toned down in the worst way possible since while the original could be frustrating at times, it was what made the charm of the game for some, and also it is even the easiest Earthworm Jim port you could ever play.
- While the soundtrack is still very catchy and great, such as New Junk City, it still a bit of a downgrade as many peoples pointed out that the soundtrack sometime sound glitchy and not well translated to the GBA sound chip, at such some peoples disliked the OST of the GBA because of not being that faithful to the original game music.
- Poor framerate that is slower than in the original because not only does the game doesn't even move at 30 FPS sometime but even the framerate can make the game more difficult to enjoy.
- Some parts of the game are cut, such as one part of the level "What the Heck", but even then that part was when you must swing on a hook to get to the next platform, so it's not important and if it was still there, then it would be even more tedious than the original because you needed to swing on two hook.
- The sound effects, while decent, are unfaithful to the original and are completely different, meaning that this port is not that faithful to the original.
- Choppy animations that doesn't move correctly, this might be why the game controls are bad because of the animation are very downgraded here, the fact that it was ported to the GBA is not an excuse because Super Mario Advance was perfectly ported from Super Mario All Stars with no animation that lag, and that port was also released in 2001 and it was even released before this Earthworm Jim port came out.
- While the graphics are still decent, the game had ton of textures either missing, or even the textures being downright glitchy, this could easily ruin the game experience and some will probably found the graphics weak because of this, in fact the original look much better than this port.
- It also had a missed oportunity to adapt the Sega CD version, which had one extra level and other contents, which the GBA could easily had been capable to adapt such levels.
Good Qualities
- The soundtrack is still very catchy to listen to, and might even had still some banger that are as good as the original despite not sounding faithful, such exemples could include New Junk City.
- The graphics are still decent at times because while the animation is choppy, at least for the most parts the graphics look decent enough and far from ugly, despite BQ#8.
- It's an adaptation of the Sega Genesis version rather than the SNES, which is great because the Sega Genesis version had one more level, the SNES version is great too, it just doesn't had as many contents than in the Sega Genesis version.
- Despite still being bad, at least it's playable and much better than the Game Boy Advance port of Earthworm Jim 2.
- Despite being unfaithful to the original, the sound effects are still decent and are better than the ones heard in the GBA port of EJ2.
Reception
Despite received a score of 72 and 6.5 user score (likely because some talk about the original) on Metacritic, the Game Boy Advance port was not well received by fans and is considered to be one of the worst port of the first game, if not the worst.
