Elinor Wonders Why is an American-Canadian animated PBS Kids series. It premiered on PBS affiliates on September 7, 2020.

Plot

Elinor Wonders Why follows the daily life of the curious young rabbit Elinor, living in Animal Town - as its name suggests, it is a town inhabited entirely by animals. Elinor is enthusiastic about learning and whenever something pops up that she doesn't understand at school or just playing around the forest with her friends, she and her best friends Olive and Ari seek the answer through scientific inquiry.

Why It Wonders Why

  1. The show is very educational and teaches facts about nature, simple science, the environment and community. Some of the lessons taught by the show are facts that both children and older audiences can learn from; for instance, one episode is focused on the science behind Velcro, whereas another focuses on a strange natural phenomenon where plants grow in a zig-zag manner as opposed to straight.
  2. Every episode includes a catchy song which relates to the theme. Episodes featuring Señor Tapir feature a second song which often pertains to the accomplishments of a famous historical figure in a similar manner to Xavier Riddle and the Secret Museum.
  3. The main trio of characters is very likeable. Elinor is joyous and curious, with lots of motivation and excitement when it comes to learning about new topics. Olive is gentle, kind, and intelligent, often serving as the voice of reason for the other kids. She enjoys reading books and though she is reserved, she is a great friend to the others. Ari serves as the comic relief of the group, cracking jokes and coming up with silly ideas to add some humor to the series so it is interesting and entertaining. The adult characters in the series also serve as positive role models to the kids.
  4. The animal characters display characteristics of their own species and use this to their advantage, both to advance plots and educate the viewers. For instance, an episode focuses on how Elinor and Ari stay warmer than Olive and do not need to wear winter coats because they, as a bunny and a bat, have fur, which Olive the elephant does not.
  5. Awesome 2D animation.
  6. Backgrounds use a soft, eye-pleasing watercolor style.
  7. Great voice acting.
  8. Adorable character designs, especially for Elinor, Ari, and Olive.

Bad Qualities

  1. The show is very slow-paced, which may not appeal to older viewers or those who prefer a show with more humor or action.
  2. Some of the child voice acting can sound a little bit forced.
  3. Many of the songs sound alike and can be forgettable.

Trivia

  • The Elinor character is based on the creator Jorge Cham's own daughter.
