Ella Bella Bingo (Norwegian: Elleville Elfrid) is a 2020 Norwegian 3D computer-animated adventure comedy film based on the preschool TV series of the same name. A joint-production between Studio 100 Films and Kool Produktion AS, the film is directed by Frank Mosvold and Atle Solberg Blakseth. It was released in Norway on 24 January 2020, and was a commercial success.
Plot
Ella Bella and Henry are best friends, and plan on making a circus together, but when cool kid Johnny arrives in town he becomes Henry's new best friend, making Ella jealous and jeopardising the circus.
Bad Qualities
- The plot is very poor, weak and uninteresting, especially considering that Ella's "adventure" or quest is simply to find Henry, who wasn't even really missing, just hanging out with his father.
- The humor is quite mediocre, with most of the jokes being quite weak and bland, such as the scenes where a chicken and a rabbit duel over a carrot.
- The script seems very poorly written, with the characters' lines sounding stupid or weird most of the time.
- The movie is full of ridiculous and filling scenes, like the scene where the characters go to look for Henry in an ice cream shop, and the ice cream man instead of simply giving the information that he saw him there, he makes a totally unnecessary dramatic speech and soon after, he starts singing along with the other characters.
- The animation is very flawed and weird, especially by 2020 standards. The biggest example of this is the movement of the characters, which looks very robotic and dated, not to mention some weird facial expressions. Additionally, the background character designs look recycled from the main cast, only changing the hair and clothing color scheme, but still keeping the face shapes identical.
- And to top it off, the chickens are a terrible choice for comic relief.
Good Qualities
- At least it seems to have a good grasp of the source material, so much so that we even see the original 2D character designs in the tree house.
- Most of the characters are likeable, like Ella, Henry and Johnny.
- Apart from the poor movements, the animation is amazing, with interesting CGI character designs and well done backgrounds with a great color palette, the lighting is also decent.
- The message and moral lesson that the movie teaches about friendship is very good.
- The voice cast is pretty decent.
Critical reception
The film received a rating of 4.8/10 on IMDB and generally mixed to positive reviews from critics.
