"Eternal Moonshine of the Simpson Mind" is the ninth episode of the nineteenth season of The Simpsons.
Plot
When a potent drink erases the last 24 hours of his memory, Homer seeks help to try to piece together the events that led to his family being gone.
Why It Rocks
- The concept of Homer trying to remember the events that happened during the last 24 hours is brilliant.
- Much like "Who Shot Mr. Burns?", the plot creates a lot of suspense and mystery about where the Simpsons family went and what happened to Marge at that night.
- The couch gag (which is a parody of the 1977 American documentary short Powers of Ten) is also pretty entertaining and interesting to watch too.
- The episode also brings a lot of continuity from the series, as there is a scene where Homer travels into his mind and sees a lot of memories of himself from previous episodes.
- Many of the minor characters get a turn of the spotlight. Some of them also have funny lines/jokes such as Abe Simpson's line "You come to me for help rememberin'? That's like asking your horse to do your taxes...which I did in 1998".
- The scene where Moe pauses a video on him showing the viewer on how to make a forget-me shot and ends up pausing at moments where his face looks hideous is funny.
- Scrat from Ice Age makes a hilarious cameo in the beginning.
- The time lapse of Homer's life right before his life flashes before his eyes is an extremely emotional scene to watch, as it pictures Homer's life in just a minute and it incapsulates how hard of a childhood that Homer had but still managed to keep going forward in life.
The Only Bad Quality
- Patty and Selma are shown to be psychopathic in this episode as they both purposely push Homer off the bridge, which nearly causes his death before the party boat saves him.
- And to make matters worse is that they didn't know or tell Homer that the party boat would save them, which meant that they literally tried to kill him.
Reception
This episode gained a lot of positive feedback from fans and critics of The Simpsons due to its interesting plot and great writing. It won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Animated Program, was placed number 4 on PhantomStrider's Top 5 Best/Worst Modern Simpsons Episodes and currently sits at a 8.2 rating on IMDb.
Trivia
- This is the third episode to use the Powers of Ten couch gag, the previous two episodes to use it were "The Ziff Who Came to Dinner" and "On a Clear Day I Can't See My Sister".
- In the end of the couch gag in this episode, Homer says "weird!" in the end instead of "wow!" or "cool!".
