Face Freeze! is an episode of SpongeBob SquarePants. It is the second segment of the 20th episode of season eight of the show, as well as the first segment of the 172nd episode overall.

Plot

SpongeBob and Patrick make silly faces.

Why the Faces Are Silly (In a Bad Way) and This Episode Should Stay Frozen

  1. To point out the obvious, this episode's title is a rip-off of Frozen Face-Off, a better episode than this abomination, so much that it might get confused with that episode.
  2. This episode logically makes no sense. Making funny faces won't get your face stuck permanently no matter how hard you try.
  3. The faces that SpongeBob and Patrick make throughout the episode are over-the-top, disturbing, disgusting, unfunny, and immature and are worse than even the most exaggerated facial expressions in Season 10 onwards. Their faces were so bad that even many Bikini Bottomites stayed away from them.
    • The face SpongeBob gets stuck in is identical to the first stage of his snail transformation in Season 1's "I Was a Teenage Gary", which didn't make it better.
  4. The episode is, in fact, an utter rehash of Season 1's "Hooky"; it also bears similarities to the Simpsons short "Making Faces" from The Tracey Ullman Show.
  5. Sandy later shows up and offers to fix their faces, only for them to turn out horribly wrong. It would've been better if they were fixed in a hospital.
  6. When SpongeBob brings someone's order he drooled on a tray, he ruins three patties because of his severely disfigured face, which is outright disgusting.
  7. Horrible and dumb ending: When Mr. Krabs confronts SpongeBob and Patrick for disobeying his orders of not making any more silly faces earlier in the episode, he became so angry that his face quickly became severely frozen and disfigured. Squidward then shows up and laughs at their faces hard, causing his face to also get severely frozen and disfigured. SpongeBob, Patrick, and Mr. Krabs then start laughing at Squidward to return the favor, as the episode ends with all three of them laughing at Squidward while remaining in their severely disfigured frozen faces.
    • It also makes no sense because Mr. Krabs and Squidward made only one face each before their faces instantly got stuck, even though SpongeBob and Patrick made way more than one face.
    • This whole ending also makes it look like it's a very happy and funny ending, but it's a disturbing and very unfair ending on Mr. Krabs' and Squidward's part, with the latter because it's the episode's way of punishing them even though did they did absolutely nothing wrong.
    • This episode contains possibly the worst humor to have ever come out of the show
  8. Ironically, for an episode in which the entire plot is faces, this episode's plot is nothing as funny faces didn't make for an plot
    • Speaking of faces, this episode has even more disturbing scenes aside from the spit patty (I.E. Sandy's mammalian hands).
  9. This episode contains a lot of filler, For example, the montage of SpongeBob and Patrick terrorizing the inhabitants of Bikini Bottom with their faces lasts a minute. Additionally, this episode is considered to have the most filler in the entire series, alongside Choir Boys, SpongeBob, You're Fired, Atlantis SquarePantis and Truth or Square. Although it is important to add that 3 out of 4 of said episodes are specials, thus having a longer amount of runtime and naturally leading to more filler. And while not entirely excusing the sheer amount of nothingness in them, it still isn't exactly the best look on this episode's behalf.
  10. A bit of Squidward torture sprinkled in, especially in the tent scene and in the aforementioned ending. (See WTFAS(IABW)ATESSF#7)
  11. SpongeBob may not be at his worst in this episode, but he is still pretty idiotic and flanderized. Especially considering that HE was the one who suggested the idea of maintaining the same ugly face for a prolonged amount of time just to prove Mr. Krabs wrong. Additionally, it should be noted that he did it by screaming at his friend with a megaphone asking him to listen) and then, the day after, acts surprised after learning that the faces are jammed and won't revert back to normal.
  12. For people that don't care about "funny faces", granted, most weird faces shown in this episode are more revolting than funny, the episode in general falls flat especially in the humor department, as most of the jokes are just pointless.
  13. This episode's content makes it feel more like a SpongeBob trollfic than an actual episode.
  14. It ends Robertryan Cory's on his career on this show in the unfair note.

Redeeming Qualities

  1. Mr. Krabs at least teaches SpongeBob and Patrick a lesson.
  2. Despite how hideously horrifying the faces were, you can see that the animators and Robert Ryan Cory (who did all of the faces) put a lot of effort and imagination into them and are kind of creative.
  3. The funny faces can come across as funny and hilarious to some people.
    • Certain lines that some might find funny, such as: "You two need help", "HEY SPONGEBOB HEY SPONGEBOB HEY SPONGEBOB", and "ALRIGHT WE DID IT!!"
  4. You can use this episode to troll someone.
  5. While Sandy did make the silly faces situation worse, at least she tried to help SpongeBob and Patrick.

Reception

  • This episode received unfavourable reviews from fans. On SpongeBuddy Mania, the episode averaged 4.34/10 based on 89 rating. On IMDb, this and its sister episode Glove World R.I.P. averaged 5.2/10 based on 420 votes.
  • Mobrosstudios, despite really liking this episode aside from the ending and some other problems, compared this episode's plot to a "Fairy Tale".
  • TheMysteriousMrEnter, in "Animated Atrocities 015", Said that this episode was the second worst of the series ( that he had reviewed, at least) only behind One Coarse Meal, and also calling it worse than The Splinter. Today, even though his opinions had slightly gotten better since then, he still gave it the only dishonorable mention spot in his video about the 10 worst SpongeBob episodes of all time in his opinion.
  • As mentioned before, PIEGUYRULZ ranked this episode SCUMBOB.

Trivia

  • This episode has the same writing team as the most infamous episode "One Coarse Meal".
  • This episode (along with Glove World R.I.P) is the final time when Robertryan Cory worked on.
