"Family Picture" is the twenty-eighth episode in the first season of The Garfield Show.
Plot
Jon tries to take the perfect family picture for Liz's birthday present. He discovers that taking a picture is a magnet for interruptions.
Why It Rocks
- Jon wishing Liz a happy birthday before the flashback started was very nice to watch.
- The drawing/rough sketch Jon did of how he wanted his family picture with Garfield and Odie to look is well done and looks similar to the animation of the original Jon Davis comic strips and Garfield and Friends, along with the background Jon, Garfield and Odie get into when being taken by a famous photographer.
- The attempts Jon tries to take the perfect family picture for Liz's birthday are very relatable.
- Unlike in most episodes, Garfield, Odie and Jon are still tolerable characters and don't show their flanderization.
- Garfield kicking Nermal out of his front yard and blasting him to space & underground was well-deserved and considered Nermal's karma for his actions in "King Nermal" & here.
- He even does a fourth-wall break about him when he says "if this seems drastic to you, you obviously never met Nermal. Trust me, it's necessary".
- Good Ending: Although all of Jon's attempts to take the perfect family picture in his front yard fail, him, Odie and Garfield decide to go to a famous photographer to get their picture taken. Then, the flashback ends, Liz loves the photo and even said that Jon's scared look is the Jon she knows.
Bad Qualities
- On the other hand, it can be considered a Jon torture episode due to all of his attempts for the perfect family picture in his front yard failing due to Nermal, his neighbor, a pigeon and many others ruining the photo.
- As mentioned above, Nermal is still intolerable for ruining Jon's family picture and growing jealous just because he can't get into the picture, along with the pigeon and Jon's neighbor, but Nermal and the neighbor do get their comeuppance by getting tied and before the neighbor when Garfield sent Nermal into space & underground.
- The scene where Garfield scratches his foot and wiggles his toes after waking up, while brief, looks a bit suggestive for a kid's show, especially for people who have feet fetish.
Reception
It holds a rating of 7.2/10 on IMDB.
Trivia
- A few pictures from Garfield and Friends can be seen in the background when Liz was approving Jon's family picture.
