"As you should expect, Far Cry 6 is another reskin of Far Cry 3 which came out in 2012, and Ubisoft has done nothing to refine a now-ancient formula."

Far Cry 6 is a 2021 first-person shooter game developed by Ubisoft Toronto and published by Ubisoft. It is the eleventh installment overall in the Far Cry series.

Plot

Far Cry 6 takes place in the fictional Caribbean island of Yara, and is ruled by the corrupt dictator Antón Castillo, who intends on modernizing Yara due to it being behind on the times regarding technology and economics. Refugee Dani Rojas attempts to escape to the US, but Antón intervenes this escape after finding out his son, Diego, was attempting to escape as well. Dani is nearly killed during this intervention, resulting in them joining forces with the rebellious guerilla faction with the intent of freeing Yara from Antón's tyranny.

Bad Qualities

  1. Just like Far Cry 4 and 5, there's very little changes in terms of gameplay when compared to Far Cry 3. Considering that Far Cry 3 released nearly ten years before this game, any true innovation at this point is long overdue.
  2. What isn't helping the now-stale formula is that certain gameplay elements introduced in the previous mainline games to help in making them less stale are removed here for seemingly no reason, or are made worse.
    • The ability to throw paddles has been removed. Instead, baseballs can be thrown, but they're pretty much worthless since they barely damage enemies.
    • Ammo types have been made annoying. There are a lot of enemies that are weak to only one ammo type while the other types do very little damage to them, and you can only carry one ammo type for each gun at a time.
  3. Most of the new gameplay elements introduced here barely add anything innovating to the overall gameplay, and feel tacked on if anything. The only truly notable addition is the chicken fighting mini-game.
    • Althoguh riding horses sounds like a cool idea on paper, the horse physics are ridiculous. They act as if they're cars and can plow over and destroy signs and other vehicles as if they're a truck.
    • Players can upgrade their bases, but all this is is just a simple menu to select upgrades and that's it.
    • Players have a backpack that can fire missiles at enemies, but it doesn't change the way combat plays out that much.
    • There's a mini-game where you give orders to your troops, but it plays out like a generic text adventure mobile game.
  4. The story is predicable and boring, and most of the twists are made obvious. A lot of the story boils down to recruiting different people, rinse and repeat.
    • In previous Far Cry games, the main antagonists personally know the protagonist, making a connection between the two characters to make those plots feel more personal. Here however, Antón is unaware of Dani's existence until towards the end of the game, taking away that personal feeling.
  5. Most of the characters are generic in terms of personality, and often tend to get underutilized due to the story trying to include as much story arcs for these characters as possible.
    • Even Antón Castillo hardly gets any screen time either, wasting most of his potential to be a great villain. And when he does appear, he doesn't stand out that much in terms of personality just like the other characters. What doesn't make sense about this is that he was promoted a lot during pre-release footage due to him being portrayed by Giancarlo Esposito, who is best known for his critically acclaimed performance as Gus Fring from Breaking Bad.
    • They're also useless in combat and serve more as a distraction than helping in taking out enemies.
  6. Most of the missions consist of going to some place marked on the map and taking out all the enemies there, which is an extremely formulaic, uncreative, and overused level format at this point.
  7. Guns equipped with suppressors are unintentionally overpowered thanks to the poor enemy A.I. having a hard time at detecting where the player is, as well as them barely doing anything when another enemy is killed right in front of them.
    • On the contrary, the enemies have pinpoint accuracy, making them feel cheaply difficult yet stupid at the same time.
  8. Speaking of the enemies; when a player does get spotted and the location is alarmed, enemies tend to constantly spawn out of nowhere. This feels like a cheap tactic to pad out combat sections and makes them longer than they ever need to be.
    • Enemies also tend to call in helicopters a lot, which can get pretty annoying. This only get worse as the player levels up and progresses through the game.
  9. Healing has a fairly long cooldown, and with the enemies having cheaply high accuracy, players will find themselves often hiding and waiting for their health to go back up. The maximum capacity for healing items is also low, meaning that players will quickly run out of them a lot.
  10. As with a lot of open-world games, glitches are fairly common.
    • With the HD texture pack installed, the framerate tends to drop below 10 FPS for a few seconds every time a menu is opened or closed.
    • Cutscenes tend to suffer from this, such as when one of the characters plays the guitar, only for there to be no sound coming from the guitar.
    • Some graphical settings tend to reset to the default settings each time the player starts up the game.
    • Lighting tends to flicker on certain NPCs and objects.
    • Collision detection for numerous objects like trees or walls tend to be off, resulting in players shooting at invisible walls.
    • Dialogue in some side missions tend to get stuck in an infinite loop and repeat over and over again, even after said mission has been completed.
    • Oftentimes certain mission objectives won't work properly, forcing the player to reload their last save to avoid a softlock.
  11. Poor navigation due to the mission waypoints being far vaguer at where they player needs to go, and having a large and uninteresting map won't help in making matters less tedious.
  12. The boss fights are pathetically easy thanks to the game often giving the player ridiculously overpowered weapons. It's possible to defeat these bosses in mere seconds thanks to these overpowered weapons.
  13. The effects for most of the gear is worthless, such as gaining slightly increased speed after killing an animal. There's no point in using most of it except for aesthetic purposes.
  14. The graphics are terrible and outdated-looking, looking like an eighth-generation game at best due to the game running on the outdated Dunia Engine.
    • Most of the foliage is pretty stiff and lifeless looking, which is immersion breaking for today's standards.
    • There is an HD texture pack to improve the graphics, but it requires a very high amount of RAM for it to run properly, requiring a whopping 12-16 gigabytes of RAM depending on your PC's specs.

Good Qualities

  1. Even if it's in need of innovation, the core gameplay of being non-linear and encouraging player to play however they like is still as great as it is in previous Far Cry games.
  2. Unsurprisingly, Giancarlo Esposito does a great job at portraying Antón Castillo, and does his best to make Antón as memorable as possible despite his little screen time.
  3. The chicken fighting mini-game is pretty well fleshed out and fun to play.
  4. Dani Rojas is a pretty well-written protagonist. Compared to previous Far Cry protagonists, they have more personality, a more in-depth backstory, and has plenty of memorable lines.
  5. Chorizo, a dachshund whose hind legs are paralyzed, is a downright adorable character.
  6. Aside from the aforementioned performance bug, the game itself pretty well-optimized, with the frame-rate almost never dipping below unless the absolute highest graphical setting are selected.
    • There's also plenty of graphical options to choose from, along with a preview of these options next to the menus.
  7. Despite the somewhat outdated graphics, the Caribbean themed scenery is colorful and pretty nice looking at times, especially the sunsets and sunrises.

Reception

Far Cry 6 was met with mixed-to-positive reception from critics, but a mixed-to-negative reception from gamers. Criticism was mainly aimed at how little the game differentiated from Far Cry 3, especially since Far Cry 4 and 5 repeated the same mistake.

On Metacritic, the game has a Metascore of 74/100 on the PC, a 73/100 on the PS5, and a 79/100 on the Xbox Series X/S. Meanwhile, the user score is a 3.6/10 on the PC, a 4.8/10 on the PS5, and an 5.1/10 on the Xbox Series X/S.[1][2][3]
