Friday Night Funkin' is a 2020 rhythm game co-created by ninjamuffin99, PhantomArcade, evilsk8r, and KawaiSprite. It was released on a web browser on itch.io, wp:Newgrounds, and it is available to download on Microsoft Windows, macOS, and Linux devices.

Plot

The protagonist, Boyfriend, is trying to woo Girlfriend, but her dad doesn't allow it. Boyfriend must beat her dad and others in a singing competition to get the approval he needs.

Gameplay

The gameplay pattern is similar to Konami's Dance Dance Revolution games or Chris Danford's Stepmania. The gameplay consists of, as befits a rhythm game, press one of the four arrows offered by the game at the right moment.

Why It Rocks

  1. The game has the greatest incentive to play the game, due to the audio aspect to which the developers put in any effort, which is the main aspect of rhythm games.
    • The biggest point in Friday Night Funkin' is the soundtrack, which is amazing and catchy, with the best examples being Dadbattle, Fresh, South, Winter Horrorland, all of the Week 3 and Week 4 tracks, Thorns, and Ugh. It would make you want to try to get it to your head or play any week longer to listen to the music, or even go to YouTube and download the music on your computer, phone, or tablet.
    • In the case of sound effects, they make the game better. What is special about the game is that instead of the usual vocals you'll hear in many other games of the genre, the sound of characters has been replaced, to some extent to resemble Vocaloid, due to some modulated voices, but also make noises, like robots. The game is also accompanied by sounds that are probably meant to remind the player of praise, but also appear, counting down the time to the start of its gameplay for any song.
  2. The animation and art style is very good, lovely, and unique. Due to its art style, it makes it incredibly pleasant on the eyes for a Flash game, despite being made with OpenFL via Haxe. The game is kept in the artistic style of typical Newgrounds animations, using the design of some characters in the Chibi style (including Boyfriend, Girlfriend, and Pico), which makes some characters look cute at times, especially when they are open-mouthed. Even though it is an OpenFL game resembling a Flash game, it runs at a constant 60FPS which makes the game better.
    • Pico from Pico's School makes a return after 4 years, and has a really good redesign.
  3. The gameplay is fun, addictive, and fast-paced and simple but responsive controls, especially if you play it on Normal and Hard, and it even has surprisingly good replay value and above all, the gameplay is very similar to Dance Dance Revolution (as mentioned before) and Stepmania, and the arrows can be displayed, and it doesn't make it generic.
  4. The characters are likeable, with the most notable being Boyfriend, due to his dedication to winning his girlfriend by rivalry with singing, and Monster, an enjoyable, human-eating creep with a good singing voice.
  5. Skid and Pump from Sr Pelo's Spooky Month make a guest appearance as well. They star in Week 2, where you'll face them in a spooky place to keep the vibe of Halloween, their favourite holiday (which they even celebrate in June).
  6. Week 6 is really interesting as it is unique to the rest. Not only this Week have a unique art style and aesthetic, being that it takes place inside an old video game, but also includes visual novel elements, which makes this Week receiving a storyline. Additionally, Senpai turns into a demon in the last song.
    • Also, on the screen when you choose a week, on the television you can see a console that is the PlayStation connected, which looks faithful to its design and is a reference.
    • Surprisingly, there's even some lore in the game revealed in "Thorns" where Senpai says that Girlfriend's dad trapped him in the game.
  7. Like Minecraft, it has tons of mods, with many being incredibly well-done, for example Vs. Whitty, Tricky the Clown from Madness Combat, Matt from Wii Sports (Or also known as Wii Funkin'), The Angry Video Game Nerd over Boyfriend, 2B, Princess Peach as Girlfriend, HoloNight Funkin, Rayman, Hollow Knight and Among Us mods based on the Boyfriend's and Girlfriend's gender swap, with Boyfriend's parents, Hatsune Miku (as a rival), Elegant Night Dancin', and more. The game receives mods that feature a completely new custom Week with custom or already existent songs, with a rival created from scratch or taken from different media by the community, which is most noticeable in Vs. Whitty and Hatsune Miku (as a rival). There are many mods that perfectly match the art style of the game, which is really impressive on the part of the artists, as it is not an easy task to imitate a personal art style. Additionally, it's easy to mod and put them into the game.
  8. The Game Over screen is quite amusingly realized as it shows a Boyfriend skeleton with two blue testicles and a brain with the "Retry" inscription.
  9. The game is still supported by developers, adding new weeks, characters, and songs with each major update.
  10. On April 18 of this current year, Newgrounds announced that Friday Night Funkin' is having a Kickstarter to make the game a full-fledged game with 20 more weeks and 60 more songs, which shows that the developers are eager to give more content to the game's fans.

The Only Bad Quality

Note: This section will only apply to the game itself, and not the community itself.

  1. The game is horribly unoptimized on many computers (including low-end and average hardware) (while some of them capable to run GTA V with no crashes), especially loading the Spooky Month (Week 2) or Red Snow (Week 5) level through Free Play mode, it always crashes constantly and has a rare chance to loading in (this also happens with other weeks but not often), this makes no sense despite the game's size is 140MB (139MB for the 32-bit version), even worse, the 32-bit version is more unoptimized and glitchier, sometimes the entire background of the Spooky Month level will appear black (also applies to Girlfriend), making only see Boyfriend, Skid and Pump, for the Red Snow level, sometimes Daddy Dearest, Mommy Mearest and Girlfriend, their textures/sprites will disappear and become a black square, not to mention the game takes too long to load a level, even choosing a song in Free Play mode has tons of lag spikes due to the memory loading, also if a loading screen is too long, the game has a potential to crash (or sometimes work with graphical glitches as for the problems mentioned above), all of this inconvenience makes the game feel similar to the PC ports of Grand Theft Auto IV and Red Dead Redemption II.
    • The Linux version has worse optimization, as instead of sprites becoming black squares, the game crashes with a "Segmentation fault" error.

Trivia

  • The week 7 update managed to attract an influx of traffic so huge that Newgrounds crashed.
