Frogger 2: Swampy's Revenge is the sequel to Hasbro Interactive's remake of Frogger, released in October 2000 for the PlayStation, PC and Dreamcast and developed by Blitz Games. A similar game was also released for the Game Boy Color.

Plot

Swampy, a crocodile who Frogger steps on, takes revenge on him by kidnapping Frogger and Lillie Frog's babies.

Why It Rocks

  1. A lot of the issues from the remake are fixed up, most notably the cheap difficulty is refined to make the game more user-friendly.
  2. Easy and Medium difficulties have no time limit, allowing the player to complete the level for as long as they need to. The Hard mode does include a time limit to give players a challenge.
  3. Lillie Frog is introduced as an additional playable character in some levels.
    • Other than Frogger and Lillie in the main Swampy's Revenge mode, you can play as many other frogs and characters, including Swampy the Crocodile in Frogger's Arcade if they're unlocked through finding coins.
  4. Frogger's abilities from the remake return, and are even better than before:
    • Super Jumping now allows Frogger/Lillie to do a double jump if the button is tapped twice.
    • Croaking also returns and can now detect where the next Frog Baby is.
    • Licking can now allow Frogger/Lillie to eat up bonuses, like extra life flies and power-up flies.
  5. On the topic, three power-ups are featured:
    • Quick Hop - Frogger/Lillie can hop faster than usual.
    • Auto Hop - Holding down the directional keys can make Frogger/Lillie hop rather than just doing it once at a time.
    • Slow Hop - Slows down Frogger/Lillie's hopping. Only appears in the Multiplayer mode.
  6. Rather than collecting each frog and going back to the start in the 1997 game, the frogs this time all count as checkpoints, meaning if you get hit, you get sent to the last frog you saved rather than to the beginning.
  7. Each level has twenty-five coins, collecting them all in each level gives the player extra content like new multiplayer levels and new characters.
  8. Good and funky music that feature many memorable themes, such as the intro theme.
  9. Nice graphics that are even better than in the remake, with many detailled characters models and being quite colorful.
  10. Frogger's Arcade allows you to complete original levels or play the levels you complete in Swampy's Revenge Mode again.
  11. A great and expanded multiplayer mode, which can be played with up to four players, two on the PS1 unless you have a Multitap:
    • The race mode is improved significantly from the remake, due to it being more fun and having a better camera.
  12. The GBC port is a very nice port unlike most PS1 to GBC ports and is a unique experience too.
  13. Tight and responsive controls, and they are a big improvement over the remake, since here they never feel unresponsive and clunky, and they always work for the most parts.

Bad Qualities

  1. The cutscenes are incredibly cheesy with poor voice acting and choppy CGI animation, which is a huge downgrade to the 1997 game's intro, but howewer they are still somewhat decent and really funny to watch.
  2. Clocking in at about one to two hours of playtime, due to the game's story being incredibly short.
  3. The PlayStation version runs at a far slower framerate than the Dreamcast and PC versions, making it quite hard to play at times.

Trivia

  • A separate version on the Nintendo 64 was planned, but that version was canceled.
