Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga is a 2024 Australian[3] post-apocalypse film directed, co-written, and co-produced by George Miller. The fifth instalment to the Mad Max franchise, it serves as a spin-off and prequel to the widely acclaimed 2015 film, Mad Max: Fury Road, focusing on the character Furiosa (originally portrayed by Charlize Theron).

Plot

As the world fell, young Furiosa was snatched from the Green Place of Many Mothers and into the hands of a great Biker Horde led by the Warlord Dementus (portrayed by Chris Hemsworth). Sweeping through the Wasteland, they come across the Citadel presided over by The Immortan Joe. While the two Tyrants work for dominance, Furiosa (portrayed by Anya Taylor-Joy) must survive many trials as she puts together the means to find her way home.

Why It's a Mad Max Saga

  1. While a Mad Max prequel isn't something new, it was executed well, showcasing its darker tone of Furiosa and helping one understand her more as a character and why she receives good character development throughout and before she became an adult in Fury Road.
  2. The film nicely explains the origin story of how Furiosa lost her mom and became who she was before she met Max Rockatansky in Fury Road and the events of that film, allowing viewers to understand her more as a character and how she lost her left arm for her to get a prosthetic arm, showcasing her excellent character development.
    • The beginning also goes into depth about how she lost her mother and how she was taken from The Green Place.
  3. The film still keeps its charm by avoiding profanity and driving intensity while being dark and taking place in a wasteland.
  4. The acting performances, particularly those of Anya-Taylor Joy and Chris Hemsworth, are excellent; the former looks like a complete badass playing Furiosa, and as for the latter, it's clear that he is having the time of his life portraying Dr. Dementus.
  5. The characters are still likable all around, with Furiosa keeping the charm she had in Fury Road where she is dark in all great ways, and she is still a badass in this film, just like in Fury Road.
    • In addition to that, Dr. Dementus is a fantastic and fun villain, as shown by his behavior as a wasteland warlord and how he imprisoned Furiosa.
  6. Awesome directing by George Miller, who's famously known for directing Fury Road; again, he still keeps the charm of the franchise, and his directing around works amazingly.
  7. Fantastic cinematography that still makes the camera shots great for the film's intensity, and given that it takes place in a wasteland, this goes without saying.
  8. The action sequences are still great, with Furiosa's dark sniping skills and the driving fight scenes.
  9. The musical score by Tom Holkenburg is still appropriate here, adding to the intensity and whole thrill ride (who also did compelling scores in previous films such as Deadpool, Alita: Battle Angel, the Sonic the Hedgehog trilogy, Zack Snyder's Justice League, Godzilla vs. Kong, and many more).
  10. During the film's credits, it throws back to the events in Fury Road (which came out in 2015) by showing Charlize Theron's portrayal of Furiosa, which is an extremely nice touch.

Bad Qualities

  1. While Furiosa is likable, she sometimes speaks too fast (or slightly too fast), making it harder for viewers to understand what she is saying.
  2. The pacing isn't as good as its successor did; granted, the latter managed to do better on pacing by making it where the scenes don't clog it up, but here, it is more lengthy than Fury Road and can be a drag to get through at times.

Reception

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga received positive reviews from critics who praised Miller's direction, cinematography, action sequences, musical score, performances of the cast (particularly those of Taylor-Joy and Hemsworth), and action sequences, but criticized its pacing. It earned a 90% on Rotten Tomatoes,[4] an 7.6/10 on IMDB,[5] and a 79/100 on Metacritic based on 62 critics, indicating "generally favorable reviews".[6] Entertainment Weekly gave it a B+,[7] and NME gave it 5/5 stars.[8]

Despite this, it was a box office bomb.
