Furious 7 (also known as Fast & Furious 7) is a 2015 American action film directed by James Wan and written by Chris Morgan. It is the sequel to Fast & Furious 6 (2013), which serves as the seventh installment in the Fast & Furious franchise. The film stars Vin Diesel, Paul Walker (in his final film role), Dwayne Johnson, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Chris "Ludacris" Bridges, Jordana Brewster, Kurt Russell, and Jason Statham. In the film, Dominic Toretto, Brian O'Conner, and the rest of their team have returned to the United States to live normal lives after securing amnesty for their past crimes, until Deckard Shaw, a rogue special forces assassin seeking to avenge his comatose younger brother, puts the team in danger once again.

Furious 7 premiered in Los Angeles on April 1, 2015, and was theatrically released in the United States on April 3, exactly six years after the fourth film was released. Upon release, the film became a critical and box office success, with praise being aimed at the film's action sequences and its emotional tribute to Walker. It grossed $397.6 million worldwide during its opening weekend, which was the highest of all-time at the time. The film grossed over $1.5 billion worldwide, making it the third highest-grossing film of 2015 and the fourth highest-grossing film of all time at the time of release. It was the highest grossing film of 2015 out of the domestic box office. Additionally, Furious 7 became the highest-grossing film of the franchise in the first twelve days of its theatrical release and ranks as the highest-grossing film in the franchise to date.

Plot

Dominic and his crew thought they'd leave the criminal mercenary life behind. They'd defeat international terrorist Owen Shaw and went their separate ways. But now, Shaw's brother, Deckard Shaw, is out killing the crew one by one for revenge. Worse, a Somalian terrorist called Jakande and a shady government official called "Mr. Nobody" are both competing to steal a computer terrorism program called "God's Eye," that can turn any technological device into a weapon. Toretto must reconvene with his team to stop Shaw and retrieve the God's Eye program while caught in a power struggle between the terrorist and the United States government.

Why It Rocks

  1. It's one of the big improvements in the Fast & Furious franchise.
  2. Not only the movie continues where Fast and Furious 6 left off, it also takes place after Toyko Drift, where it explains how Dom went to Tokyo and it connects with Hans' death after he was killed by Deckard Shaw.
  3. Great acting from actors such as Paul Walker, Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham.
  4. Despite only making a cameo, it was nice to see Lucas Black as Sean Boswell again after being last seen in Toyko Drift.
  5. Excellent action sequences and car chases.
  6. Great directing from James Wan, who would also direct Aquaman.
  7. Amazing soundtrack.
    • Additionally, "See You Again" by Wiz Khalifa and Charlie Puth is a beautiful song that fits well in the story as well as serving as a farewell to Brian's character and Paul Walker himself.
  8. The plot is decently written.
  9. Gorgeous set pieces which are incredibly well-made and realistic.
  10. The mild comedy manages to blend well with the action.
  11. Epic final battle with Deckard Shaw, Mose Jakande and his henchmans during the great final climax.
  12. The plane drop scene is awesome.
  13. The tribute to Walker at the end was very touching.
  14. Overall it was a great way to end Paul Walker's career and Brian O'Conner's character arc.

Reception

The movie received positive reviews and acclaim and is often considered to be the best Fast & Furious movie to date. Critics praised the set pieces, the tribute to Paul Walker and acting. On review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds an 81% with a consensus that reads "Serving up a fresh round of over-the-top thrills while adding unexpected dramatic heft, Furious 7 keeps the franchise moving in more ways than one.", while IMDb scores the film a 7.1, Metacritic scores it a 65, indicating "generally favorable reviews" and Letterboxd scores it a 3.2.

Trivia

  • After Paul Walker died, James Wan used body doubles, stunt doubles and CGI to finish it, as well as recycle previous footage.
  • Justin Bieber was planned to be the new Brian O'Conner's voice actor, but it was entirely scrapped due to being an extremely controversial artist at the time in which Cody Walker, Paul's brother is his actual new voice actor in the film.
