Gantz (stylized as GANTZ) is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Hiroya Oku. It tells the story of Kei Kurono and Masaru Kato, both of whom died in a train accident and become part of a semi-posthumous "game" in which they and several other recently deceased people are forced to hunt down and kill aliens armed with a handful of futuristic items, equipment, and weaponry. It was serialized in Shueisha's seinen manga magazine Weekly Young Jump from June 2000 to June 2013, with its chapters collected in 37 tankōbon volumes.

Bad Qualities

  1. It's extremely immature and juvenile, and most of the time, outright mean-spirited.
  2. It has many unlikeable characters, even if this is intentional.
    • For example, in the first half, Kei Kurono is a whiny perverted douche who looks down on others.
    • Kei Kishimoto is just a damsel-in-distress who serves nothing at all for fanservice.
  3. Most of the human villains are generic thugs and rapists who have zero personality.
  4. While not the worst factor of the manga, it has too much focus on sex, nudity, blood, and gore.
  5. At times, it can come off as offensive.
  6. Shion Izumi is by far the worst character in the whole franchise! He's a psychotic, ignorant, egotistical douche who still gets praised as a hero for all the crimes he's done.
  7. The vampires appear out of nowhere and are forgotten about later in the series.
  8. The anime adaptation of Gantz and the CGI movie were a disrespect to the manga.
  9. The worst thing of all: This manga is one of the reasons why a transgender girl attempted to commit suicide; thankfully, she survived.

Good Qualities

  1. The artwork is very detailed and awesome, like the weapons and character designs.
  2. It does get better as it progresses, especially in the second half.
  3. Hilarious moments here and there.
  4. There are some likeable characters. For example:
    • Masaru Kato
    • Reiko Shimohira
    • Yoshikazu Suzuki
    • Tae Kojima
    • Joichiro Nishi
      • Kei Kurono got more character development through the series as he becomes braver and more heroic.
  5. The concept is used properly and well-handled.
  6. It's right about how bleak and dark the world can be.
  7. The aliens are very terrifying because of their personalities, and their designs are great.
  8. The finale of the manga was amazing and emotional.
