Garfield: A Tale of Two Kitties (or Garfield 2 in the PAL region) is a 2006 action-adventure video game developed by Two Tribes and Asobo Studio and published by The Game Factory for the PlayStation 2, Nintendo DS, and Microsoft Windows. It is based on the second and final live action Garfield movie of the same name, which in turn, is based off the Garfield comic strips of the same name by Jim Davis, released to coincide with the home-video release of the movie. This is the first Garfield game to release on the Nintendo DS, before Garfield's Nightmare in 2007, and Garfield's Fun Fest in 2008, and Garfield Gets Real in 2009.

This page will only focus on the Nintendo DS version, as the PS2 and PC versions are actually decently received.

Bad Qualities

  1. Unlike the console version, it is totally unfaithful to the movie of the same name, as well as the comic strip the movie was based off.
  2. The story is terrible, as all there is to it is that after the events of the movie, Garfield goes all over England to reach Prince's palace for a royal feast.
  3. The controls feel very slippery, making Garfield very hard to control as a result, resulting in cheap hits in the latter levels throughout the game.
  4. The graphics look so bad they make Garfield's photorealistic design in the movies themselves look like his comic counterpart.
  5. There is a noticeable difficulty spike found in the latter levels of the game, despite it being way too easy for the most part.
    • In particular the second to last level's difficulty is so extreme that you may end up dying more in this level, than the rest of the game combined, due to the high amount of obstacles, and water hazards there are.
  6. There is no balance in the length of time that each of the levels are required to complete them. The binocular levels can literally be completed in seconds, while the later platforming levels can go on for over 5 minutes.
  7. There are zero checkpoints in any of the levels, meaning that if you die, you have to do the entire level all over again. This is really frustrating if this happens on the second to last level.
  8. The binocular levels don't really qualify as levels at all, as all you do is hover over to a certain part of the screen and you beat the level.
  9. In the level where you climb a tree, one of the foods is literally unreachable, making it impossible to 100% the game, even by using flying cheats. It's anyone's guess what you end up getting if you collect it, as well as every other bit of food in the game, it's likely going to be absolutely nothing.
  10. A majority of the game takes place in either a tree, or the sewers, making this game lack in variety when it comes to the background designs.
  11. The bus level is nothing short of one of the most generic puzzles in any Nintendo DS game ever made, as the only thing you'll be doing is catching a series of buses, trying to take the right route.
  12. The sewer pipe level is a very poor example of a trial and error level, as a majority of these pipes lead to Garfield taking damage.
  13. In some of the levels, if you get stuck under platforms when the water rises up to them, you are very likely to die instantly because of poor collision, and no controls that allow Garfield to swim in these situations.
  14. Some of the platforms are really hard to land on, and falling off them in some cases can force you to go all the way back up to the top again from square one.
  15. The music, while good, sometimes sounds like it came straight out of a Java game.

Good Qualities

  1. The level design most of the time definitely seems to have potential.
  2. The platforming-only levels that take place in the city of London are some of the best levels in the entire game.
  3. The maze level in Prince's royal garden is a tolerable puzzle stage, unlike the others.
  4. The music is catchy for the most part.
  5. The way the 2.5D has been utilized in this game is innovative for what it's worth.
  6. The credits is so stupid, yet really smart at the same time, as the credits scroll through multiple in-game Nintendo DS systems

Trivia

  • This is the only Garfield game on the DS to have releases on other platforms, and the only Garfield game overall with multiple different versions of the game, all of which completely differ in gameplay.
  • This is the first Garfield game to release on the Nintendo DS, before Garfield's Nightmare in 2007, Garfield's Fun Fest in 2008, and Garfield Gets Real in 2009.
