Garry's Mod (commonly abbreviated as GMod, stylized as garry's mod), is a sandbox physics game developed by Garry Newman, and later by his company, Facepunch Studios for Microsoft Windows, OS X, and Linux.

Garry's Mod was originally a mod for the game Half-Life 2 but was later made into a standalone release in 2006.

Why It's Imaginable

  1. What makes Garry's Mod stand out from other sandbox games is that the game is extremely ambitious and does not have any predetermined objectives. This leaves you, the player, to do whatever you want in it with almost every single thing imaginable, including, but not limited to:
    • Build contraptions using various parts.
    • Explore various maps, whether they be ones made by other people or maps from various Source games (Half-Life 2, Counter-Strike: Source, Team Fortress 2, Portal, etc., though it does come with a downside you have to own that game minus Half-Life 2.)
    • Pose ragdolls and props from the aforementioned Source games, in addition to the ones that other people have either created themselves or ported from other sources.
    • Make Machinima with said ragdolls and props like countless other people including RubberFruit, DasBoSchitt, SMG4, the late Kitty0706, and more have done so.
    • Make an "Alternate Reality Game", in which, for this case, you make a normal machinima, but add some riddles and conspiracy into it, usually by adding a black figure in the background, far away. This was a trend in the community back in late 2021 and continues to this day.
  2. Other than Sandbox, many popular game modes are fun to play such as Prop Hunt, Trouble in Terrorist Town, DarkRP, Hide and Seek, and much, MUCH more.
  3. Tons of mods that are easy to download. The great majority of them are well-made.
  4. Each player can freely import and export stuff made in the game, such as add-ons, dupes, saves, and demos. Dupes (duplications) are various contraptions, saves are modifications of maps and demos are short videos created in Garry's Mod. This leaves players with many possibilities and ideas.
    • This has made Garry's Mod extremely popular among machinima creators and gamers and put Garry and Facepunch Studios on the map, with many people still using Garry's Mod to this day. It's gotten so popular that Garry currently has a VR-focused sequel/spiritual successor in the works called s&box.
  5. You can make humorous faces in the game.
  6. The game gives players an unprecedented level of control and still has loyal fans.[1]
  7. There are add-ons in this game called Nextbots, which can be programmed for different purposes besides trying to fight you by pummeling through obstacles (or as the TV Tropes people call it, lightning bruisers). And honestly, it usually can be somewhat funny, or as today's society calls it, "goofy". Usually, the nextbots are images or .pngs of several meme figures such as Obunga, Quandale Dingle, DreamybullXXX (Ambatukam Omaygot), and Saul Goodman to name a few, but more nextbots are coming such as a 3D rendition of the nerd emoji, the intruder from The Mandela Catalogue, and much more.

Bad Qualities

  1. Many of the add-ons are for older versions of this game, and usually don't work anymore, giving Lua errors. However, most if not all of the popular ones have been re-worked by some dedicated fans of the game.
  2. Depending on the amount of add-ons that you've enabled, the average loading time takes about 25 minutes!
  3. The newest version (GMod 13) sometimes crashes for no reason at all. It is also very broken with the ragdolls from the Left 4 Dead games as an example, but there are multiple fixes to that. Though it is not a game full of glitches, nor an unplayable game, one could say Garry's Mod 13 is in the way "the most broken GMod version so far."
  4. Gmod Tower, one of Garry's Mod's most popular gamemodes, was discontinued. Thankfully, Pixeltail Games is rebuilding it using the Unreal Engine to make it a standalone game called Tower Unite.
  5. There's not much you can do with a touchpad other than explore maps or summon NPCs and weapons with the console.
  6. As stated on WII#1, excluding Half-Life 2, you have to own any of the games that run on the Source engine, or you can’t use it in-game. You also have to keep them installed.
