Genocyber is a 1994 science-fiction OVA series licensed by Central Park Media and is based on the manga of the same name. It is infamous for its unnecessary shock value and gore.

Bad Qualities

  1. Terrible storyline that's badly executed and was supposed to have an interesting premise but failed due to focusing too much on the unnecessary gore and shock value.
    • It's also unfinished just like the manga.
  2. Very poor English voice acting and like with Manga Entertainment’s other English dubs released during this period, it tries too hard to be edgy using a large amount of unnecessary swearing. This was done to sell more copies as during the 90s, R rated works sold more than their PG or G rated counterparts. In the UK, this was called “Fifteening” as a reference to the BBFC’s 15 rating.
  3. The scenes where a boy's penis is being grabbed by another boy and the helicopter shooting down children are just there for shock value, especially the first scene.
  4. Ugly animation. Battle Angel Alita, that came out a year before this, looked way better in comparison.
  5. Very unlikeable characters with most of them being genocidal maniacs, and almost none of them are likeable.
  6. Unlike most other 80's/90's OVAs that are low-budgeted, there are no cheesy nor unintentionally humorous scenes as it takes it self way too serious.
  7. Many scenes don't make sense, especially the hallucination scenes.
  8. The scenes that are supposed to be emotional are poorly executed.
  9. When text appears, a black bar will cover a large amount of scenery.
  10. The US releases are given a 13+, despite the huge amount of graphic content.
  11. Numerous plot holes, such as how it never told viewers why or how the global war started.
  12. Too many unnecessary filler scenes that don't even connect to the story in any way.

Good Qualities

  1. It did have an interesting premise that was poorly executed due to the reasons explained above.
  2. Awesome character designs and visuals, especially for the Genocyber.
  3. Good background music.
  4. Elaine and the Urchin had good chemistry with each other. If not for the focus on style over substance, it could have been well developed throughout.

Reception

Despite receiving a rating of 6.1/10 on IMDb, Genocyber was panned for its extreme graphic violence.
