Glenn Martin, DDS is a stop-motion adult animated sitcom that premiered on Nick at Nite on August 17, 2009. The series was produced by Tornante Animation and Cuppa Coffee Studios, in association with Rogers Communications. Glenn Martin, DDS was Nick at Nite's fourth original series (after Hi Honey, I'm Home!, Fatherhood and Hi-Jinks).
Why It Won't Hit the Road
- The advertisements were inappropriately placed, often after shows like iCarly or SpongeBob SquarePants, which are more family friendly. This is unlike Adult Swim's shows, which usually don't have ads on daytime Cartoon Network.
- Unfunny jokes, like the family dog having a huge anus.
- The show initially premiered with laugh tracks, which by this point, were lazy and outdated for animated sitcoms.
- One of the people who created this was Michael Eisner, the former CEO for Disney, which should be a red flag alone, as he nearly destroyed Disney, even if he did save the company from the beginning. It doesn't help that Bob Iger and Bob Chapek recently made Disney even worse of a company.
- It's really sad when you also have Eric Fogel involved as another one of the show's co-creators because he was the true heart and soul of MTV's Celebrity Deathmatch.
- The show is filled to the brim with innuendos and gross-out jokes. To give everyone some context to this, one terrible scene, in particular, involves Conor getting his head stuck inside an elephant's anus during a circus act.
- The main characters are unlikeable and stereotypical characters, and the guest characters aren’t any better:
- Glenn Martin frequently tortures his family.
- Jackie is a generic housewife. She is too short-tempered and she was really selfish in Date With Destiny and barely cared for anyone.
- Courtney fed people dog food, blamed Conor for the water and made him join wrestling, and renamed him, Connie, just for money. She also tortures him frequently and acts very bossy.
- Wendy/Bon Wa-Fo, while the most tolerable out of all the unlikable characters, tortures Conor too. She is also a Korean stereotype.
- Russ Nero tortures Glenn Martin and blame him just to take his dentistry away.
- The firemen from "Volunteers", only hired Jackie for being seductive.
- Hayley lost her mind just because she didn't get accepted from her school and drove the RV off a cliff in "Videogame Wizard".
- Gary stalks Jackie and dislikes Glenn just because he married her.
- On that topic, it even has some stereotyping for many races and cultures.
- The plot of each episode increases in stupidity as the show goes on.
- The main reason this was created is due to Nick's Nick@Nite attempt at trying to compete with Cartoon Network's midnight program for adults Adult Swim.
- The stop-motion animation (while it's decent at its time) that looks like it's trying to rip off the animation from many stop motion films, like The Nightmare Before Christmas and Coraline.
- In fact, the animation looks like a rip-off of Aardman Studios, to the point where many call it “An adult version of Wallace & Gromit.”
- The character designs are just hideous and creepy.
- It overuses the laugh track in earlier episodes, even at the unfunniest of lines, just like most modern sitcoms.
- One major running gag is that the family dog, Canine, has a giant anus.
- Insufferable soundtrack, especially the theme song (despite the music in the background being catchy). The intro only contained talking, footage of the episode (spoiling it), and whistling.
- Unsettling and disturbing episodes like "The Grossest Show On Earth", which has Conor getting his head stuck inside an elephant's anus, as mentioned above.
- It has the “dysfunctional family” cliché, which has already been done with so many cartoons, especially adult ones.
- Not to mention, Glenn Martin is the cliched "Idiotic Father", which has already been overused with characters like Homer Simpson, Peter Griffin, Cleveland Brown, and Stan Smith.
- Aside from "The Grossest Show On Earth" there have been a lot of other disturbing and/or disgusting moments in the series such as "The Tooth Shall Set You Free" episode, which is infamous for having a rather grotesque close-up of a character's unwashed and distorted teeth.
- Gives out bad messages, such as:
- All Amish are bads who overreact to electronics.
- The family torturing Conor by putting all their stuff in his room.
- Be racist to your relative all because they are different races.
- Get Jealous of Someone just because they have a president as their favorite.
- Many bad episodes such as:
- Amish Anguish (which started the series on a bad note)
- Save the Tooth
- We've Created a Mobster
- Date With Destiny (a horrible way to end the series as it ended on a cliffhanger and how it doesn't focus on the Martins. This is the worst episode overall)
- In the first episode, Glenn Martin had his finger bitten off and eaten by a kid. And when he gets it back, he accidentally shoves his arm through the kid's body.
- The last episode, Date With Destiny is a horrible way to end as mention in #19. The problem is it DID NOT focus on the Martins, seriously in the last episode? There too many gross-out especially with how Conor Martin ate an expired gum on the bathroom floor. The pink eyes and that infamous scene where Conor tries to grab Glenn with the camera on his sick face! It is too insulting to French people, not all French hate America. Jackie Martin was very unlikeable in this episode because she wanted too see St. Louis without getting sick and DID NOT BOTHER to take them to the hospital, but she is just too selfish. The ending was horrible.
Qualities That Saved the Tooth
- The stop-motion is charming.
- The laugh track was eventually removed in later episodes and re-edited out of earlier episodes after the series had aired because even the creators hate it due to the fact they are "too much internal thinking".
- Some funny moments.
- The concept of the show itself was great, but the execution was horrible.
- The voice acting and stop motion animation (despite the clay art style) are decent.
- Some characters are likable such as Connor and Canine, depending on your view.
- Wendy, while still not likable, is far more tolerable than the rest of the unlikable characters.
- Season 2 can be considered to be an improvement.
- It gives a decent look at the real world.
- "Let’s hit the road! That's me Glenn Martin, father, dentist, lover! ("Hombre!" in Season 2) But mostly father and dentist." - The intro.
- This is the first Nickelodeon animated show to be produced in high definition.
- At least it's original and creative, unlike Nick at Nite's current lineup of shows.
