Growtopia, commonly abbrebiated as GT, is a massively multiplayer online sandbox game released on November 30, 2012, for Android and iOS. It was developed by Robinson Technologies and Hamumu Software until 2017, and Ubisoft Abu Dhabi since 2017.
The game was positively received during its first few years (2012-2015) and garnered mixed-to-positive reviews during 2016-2017, while it was developed by Seth Robinson and Mike Hommel (Hamumu). However, the Ubisoft years (2018-present) had been universally panned, and they have their own page here.
Why It Used To Grow
- Being developed by indie developers Seth Robinson and Mike Hommel, the game used to have a simple, out-of-genre vibe and a unique art style that still persists today. It even spawned a few similar games, including Pixel Worlds.
- Great gameplay that emphasized its simple concept of "growing" items through trees and splicing.
- Frequent seasonal events that were highly sought for during their time, with updates to them annually.
- In-game moderators and developers were highly interactive and engaging.
- Great use of stock sounds and original music.
Qualities That Got Punched
- The game has gone downhill so badly that it now has its own separate page for its 2018-present era.
- Even during the good era of the game, there were still scammers and toxicity within the community (although they were much more effectively regulated).
- The prevalence of events and seasonal items created an economy that would be incredibly abused during the Ubisoft (2017-present) era.
- Despite accumulating an international audience, there were no direct translations to languages other than English.
- 2017, while not yet awful, is often considered the weakest "good" year of Growtopia as it was the year the Ubisoft acquisition was made. However, the downfall would not be apparent until 2018.
