HBO Family is an HBO multiplex specialty channel focusing on shows and movies just for kids and families. It was launched on December 1, 1996
Why it Welcomed to the Family
- It is considered one of the only HBO channels not to show any R or NC-17 rated films
- Airs great original programming like The Adventures of Paddington Bear, A Little Curious, Happily Ever After: Fairy Tales for Every Child, I Spy, and of course, Crashbox.
- Great blocks exclusive to the channel, like HBO KIDS (formerly known as Jam), and Magnet (2001-2005).
- Variety of programming from Sesame Workshop, including reruns of Pinky Dinky Doo, The Electric Company (2009) and Sesame Street until 2021.
- Great variety of movies from ratings G to PG-13.
Bad Qualities
- The channel, while still decent, has been going through its dip in quality since it hasn't had any original programming since Classical Baby and El Perro y El Gato since their end of their run in at least 2012 (until Esme and Roy in 2018 until it moved to Max in 2021)
- The HBO Kids block, from January 1, 2021 toFebruary 29, 2024, only aired repeats of HBO Family's old programming, like Kindergarten, A Little Curious, Happily Ever After, and Crashbox, with barely any new variety. Also not helping matters is that the HBO Kids block vanished from existence in March 2024.
- While they don't tend to air any R or NC-17 rated movies, some of their PG-13 rated movies can be a bit inappropriate to its R levels, with the Marvel and Batman movies being the worst offenders.
- The 1996-1998 era, while decent, isn't as good as the 1998-present era.
