Halloween 5:The Revenge of Michael Myers is a 1989 slasher movie and the fifth installment of the Halloween franchise. It was written and directed by Dominique Othenin-Gérard.
Plot
After lying in a coma for a year, Michael Myers (Donald L. Shanks) awakens and stalks his way back to his small hometown in Illinois, intent on killing his niece, Jamie (Danielle Harris), who has been confined to a mental institution since Michael's last attempt to slay her. Suspecting a psychic link between Michael and Jamie, psychiatrist Dr. Sam Loomis (Donald Pleasence) joins forces with Sheriff Ben Meeker (Beau Starr) and attempts to stop Michael's latest rampage.
Why Michael Myers Can't Get His Revenge On Anyone
- Much like A Nightmare on Elm Street 5: The Dream Child and Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan, the movie tries to go for a more comedic tone which feels out of place next to the previous four installments.
- Most of the new characters, especially Tina and the two goofy police officers, are annoying and unlikable.
- Ruins the iconic ending of Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers by revealing that Michael Myers is still alive and the evil not being passed on to Jamie.
- Several cartoonish moments, like Jamie somehow being able to outrun the car Michael is driving.
- Michael's mask is very ugly and looks like its constipated. Also, it looks like a rejected Thomas the Train character.
- Numerous plot holes. For example:
- Why in the living hell would the old hermit keep Michael in his house for one entire year without calling the police or taking him to a hospital?! Sure the hermit didn’t know him. But he could’ve used a weapon against him rather than getting himself killed by him
- Dr Loomis was sadly flanderized in the film. He from being a confident and selfless psychiatrist who is willing to sacrifice his own life to protect innocent people from Michael, to a unlikable and arrogant jerk who berates Jamie and uses her as bait for Michael in his old home.
- The soundtrack is very generic and almost non-existent.
- Anticlimactically kills off Rachel (a popular supporting character from the previous film) at the beginning of the movie. It's disappointing because she doesn't get to do anything interesting in the movie, and the new characters are poor replacements.
- Sheriff Meeker (another popular supporting character from the previous movie) is severely underutilised and abruptly killed off in the epilogue.
- The movie tries way too hard to humanize Michael by making him cry and taken out with tranquiliser darts.
- The Myers House looks absolutely nothing like it originally did in it’s predecessor. In this film, it’s been reduced to a gothic Victorian-style house.
- Abrupt and unsatisfying ending in which Michael is thrown in jail. Only for him to be broken out of prison by some mysterious Man in Black and Jamie crying, "NOOOO!", as the credits roll.
- False advertising: One of the posters show Jamie dressed in her clown costume. But she's not seen wearing it in the entire film aside from flashbacks.
- The tagline "Michael Lives. AND THIS TIME THEY ARE READY!" doesn't make any sense because it's not an action-oriented film and the people aren't prepared for his return.
- The cinematography is subpar and lazy as it makes it feel more like a direct-to-video movie.
- So much padding and boring filler that makes the movie feel longer than it actually is.
- Because of this there is no suspense and horror.
- Jamie's psychic connections with Michael are nothing more than a rip-off of Tina Shepard from Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood.
- Very atrocious direction from Dominique Othenin-Girard, the same director behind Omen IV: The Awakening.
Redeeming Qualities
- Danielle Harris, Donald Pleasence and Ellie Cornell still give their best performances.
- The scenes with Jamie and Billy are pretty cute.
- Some of the kills are cool and memorable.
- The laundry chute scene is pretty terrifying.
Reception
Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers was released on October 13, 1989, and was universally panned by critics, audiences and fans of the Halloween film series alike. It currently holds a 13% "rotten" rating on Rotten Tomatoes with an average of 3.59/10 and a Critic consensus that reads, "Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers finds the series embracing the crude slasher conventions with pedestrian scares, disposable characters, and aimless plotting."
Many of the cast members have also spoken out against the film, with the late Donald Pleasence having disagreements with the producers and the director about the script and mishandling of the film. Danielle Harris, Ellie Cornell and Don Shanks even admitted that they a hard time on set.
Box Office
The film grossed $11.6 million at the US box office on its $6 million budget, making it the lowest grossing film in the entire franchise.
