Have You Seen This Snail? is a SpongeBob SquarePants episode from season 4. In this episode, Gary runs away from home after being neglected by SpongeBob.

Plot

When SpongeBob forgets to feed Gary, he runs away to Downtown Bikini Bottom and ends up at a very comfortable house of a kind old woman.

Why This Snail is Found

  1. It shows how you shouldn’t push aside and take the ones you love for granted, even if it’s your pets because you don’t know what’ll happen to them next.
  2. Many amazing funny moments, like when Patrick eats expired milk by the hand, and the scene where Squidward screams at the top of his lungs in the bath while Patrick and SpongeBob stare blankly by the bathroom door, which became a famous internet meme.
  3. The episode has a lot of emotional moments with SpongeBob being desperate to find Gary so much to the point, where he's emotionally disrupted with Patrick by his side.
  4. The song itself, "Gary Come Home", is not only catchy, but also enough to make the viewers burst into tears and the song is very sad for good reason.
  5. Good ending: When SpongeBob stares at the billboard while he sad, Gary comes in and purrs to him. The two then finally reunite with Gary.
  6. Good moral: It teaches people and even the kids that pets shouldn't be ignored, as you may never know what will happen to them if they run away. Always love your pets unconditionally.
  7. Amy Poehler starred in this episode as the voice of the Granny and she doing a good job to voicing her.
  8. "Don't they know i'm busy spoiling myself? AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!"
  9. This is an amazing example of how to be a good rip-off of the another episode.
  10. After the episode, many people realized that SpongeBob was going through grief, so now it all makes sense!

Qualities That Should Never Be Found

  1. Granny is kind of a creepy and messed up character given by the fact she has caused a lot of her former pet snails to die from being overfed, that part itself is really gruesome if you think about this action.
  2. The part where SpongeBob searches for Gary in Squidward's tub may be a bit inappropriate. Though it spawned a internet meme.
  3. SpongeBob was a bit unlikeable at the beginning of the episode, as he not caring for his pet Gary and only caring about the Dirty Bubble, although that's the point for a pretty sad and sometimes a relaxing episode.
  4. Mr. Krabs is unlikeable too, as he doesn't care about SpongeBob losing Gary.

Reception

Have You Seen This Snail has received positive reception from critics and audiences alike, and it is considered as one of the best episodes, if not, the best Season 4 episode ever due to its good moral and has some sad moments.

It was viewed by eight-million people. It was the highest-rated program on all TV with children aged two to eleven for the year of 2005 behind the Super Bowl and the Super Bowl kick-off, and the highest-rated program on all of cable TV with children aged 2 to 11 and children aged 6 to 11 in 2005.

Critics produced positive reviews for "Have You Seen This Snail?" Tom Shales of The Washington Post called the episode deeply hilarious and described the plot as a "bittersweet riot." He drew attention to how the story is similar to the plot of "Dumped," an earlier episode in which Gary deserted SpongeBob.

The television critic for the St Petersburg Times was not so positive about the episode, criticizing how SpongeBob's disappointed and sad character in "Have You Seen This Snail?" is quite different to the character's normal bright personality.

Trivia

  • This is the first episode for many things:
    • The first half-hour special after The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie and with Paul Tibbitt as showrunner.
    • The first episode where the animation directors are not credited in the opening credits, and instead in the closing credits.
    • This is also the only episode where the technical director is credited in the closing credits rather than the opening credits.

In this case, it was because of the episode's guest stars being credited in the opening credits in their place.

    • The first episode where "Whats This Sting," "Vibe Q Sting," "Closing Door Sting," "Harp Ding Sting," "MailboxTensionBuild," and "Hunting Call" are heard.
    • The first episode where Patrick eats snail food.
    • The first double-length episode not to feature Patchy and Potty, not counting his cameo in the opening.
    • The episode that marks the return of Aaron Springer.
