Here Comes Honey Boo Boo is an American reality television series that aired on TLC featuring the family of child beauty pageant contestant Alana "Honey Boo Boo" Thompson. The show mainly revolves around Alana "Honey Boo Boo" Thompson and "Mama" June Shannon, and their family's crazy adventures in the town of McIntyre, Georgia.

Why It Will Make You Say "Boo!" to This Show

  1. It blatantly encourages child obesity since it promotes "Go Go Juice", a simple cocktail of Red Bull and Mountain Dew, and "Sketti and Butter", spaghetti with ketchup and melted butter or margarine. By the time the show ended, Alana had weighed 125 pounds (about 56 kg), despite being only 8 years old at the time.
  2. It features exploitation of the family's lifestyle, specifically child exploitation. "Mama" June Shannon feeds her daughter Alana those mentioned above "Go Go Juice" to get her ready for beauty contests because the beverage has a huge amount of caffeine in it.
  3. The show is nothing more than cheap entertainment, with the Thompson family being portrayed as a stereotypical redneck family for the audience to laugh at.
  4. Abysmal editing and awful production values for a reality TV show about a dysfunctional family, with the camera being stiff and jerky that is unacceptable for TV standards and audio mixing that is rather sub-par at best that can range from loud to almost insufferable for people with sensitive hearing overall.
  5. Terrible name, as the show itself is laughably called "Here Comes Honey Boo Boo" which sounds like something from a poor quality preschool show, not a reality TV show with a big budget.
  6. Mama June is selfish and sadistic to Alana "Honey Boo Boo".
  7. It is filled to the brim with gross-out moments as the family often displays their disgusting habits and behaviors. One scene in particular shows gnats crawling around Mama June's toe.
  8. The family always yells and swears at each other. Although it's bleeped out, it's still annoying otherwise.
  9. It is extremely repetitive, as every episode is always about drama and reuse the same topics every single time as it gets old very quickly to the point of becoming intolerable, as the show rarely spices things up or changes the formula to prevent itself from getting stale quickly, as it decides to play itself safe just for a quick buck as an excuse for a cheap laugh, which it fails at due to bad writing and overall being a terrible program in general.
  10. Along with Toddlers and Tiaras, it severely damaged TLC (jokingly called The Laughable Channel)'s reputation.

Redeeming Qualities

  1. There are a few funny moments here and there, such as Alana's "I don't even think I'm a real person. I think I'm a fish." quote.
  2. Its spin-off, Mama June: From Not to Hot, while not the best show in the world, is a little bit better and a vast improvement over this show.
  3. At least the show is nowhere near as bad as Toddlers and Tiaras, though it is still a bad show whatsoever.

Reception

The show was widely criticized by rotogravures like Forbes and The Guardian for its stereotypical portrayal of the protagonist family and its freak show-like entertainment based on overall exploitation of the life of the Thompsons. The most negative review was perhaps given by TV Guide magazine, which commented: "Jeers to Here Comes Honey Boo Boo for existing. Alana Thompson and her family have lowered the TV bar to new depths while introducing viewers to the terms 'forklift foot' and 'neck crust.' In a word, ewww."

It took two years for TLC to cancel the series due to its negative reception and cast member June "Mama June" Shannon is seen with Mark Anthony McDaniel, a man who served 10 years in prison after being convicted of being a registered sex offender in 2004. This prompted Shannon to admit to Entertainment Tonight that the father of her daughter Lauryn "Pumpkin" Shannon was not McDaniel, but Michael Anthony Ford–another convicted sex offender who served time for sexual exploitation after being caught on To Catch a Predator in 2005. Several episodes had already been taped for a fifth season, but none were released until TLC aired four of them as the two-hour special Here Comes Honey Boo Boo: The Lost Episodes on April 21, 2017.

Cancellation

The reason the show was canceled was because Mama June was dating a registered sex offender Anthony McDaniel. The man had previously violated June's oldest daughter 10 years earlier. And nothing of value was lost. The Thompsons now have a new show on WETV titled Mama June: From Not to Hot.
