Hi-Fi Rush is a rhythm-based action game developed by Tango Gameworks and published by Bethesda Softworks for the Windows and Xbox Series X/S platforms. It was announced on January 25, 2023 and released worldwide the same day.

Plot

Chai is an everyday dimwit that everyone despises because of his laziness. When he suddenly gets the power of rock, he joins a ragtag group of rebels to take down a hi-tech megacorp.

Why It Rocks (pun intended)

  1. Absolutely amazing soundtrack which is to be expected from a rhythm game. Even when you start the game the title screen music is catchy.
    • You can change to the original music to avoid copyright strikes on YouTube, it's very nice addition.
  2. Excellent combat that blends God of War, Bayonetta, and Devil May Cry together with Rhythm elements.
    • You can perform the special attack if you get perfect rhythm.
  3. Supertight and responsive controls.
  4. Great voice acting, both english and japanese.
  5. The bosses is absolutely good and challenging.
  6. Great level design.
  7. Amazing graphics on par with a comic book or Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse. It's proof that games don't need to have realistic graphics in order to make a great game.
  8. Likable characters such as Chai, Peppermint, and Korsica.
  9. Hilarious and nonstop humor such as Chai making a rock pose when he turns in his resume, Peppermint giving a death glare to Chai with the lights off, and the fight with Korsica.
  10. The final boss with Kale is amazing.
  11. The ending is pretty decent and in a good way to closed the studio for good.
    • Thankfully, with Krafton acquisition, it continues to making the sequel that will be potentially the real ending of the franchise.
  12. You can unlock the area once you're finishing the games to explore new area, making more replay value.
  13. There's also a survival mode, called Rhythm Tower, which is fun to play.

Bad Qualities

  1. Jumping sometimes feel floaty.
  2. The game can be a bit repetitive.
  3. Some bosses can be hard to complete.
  4. The game isn't really that long with only twelve stages that last an hour each. But that's to be expected as this game was released for $30.

Reception

Hi-Fi Rush received positive reviews from critics and acclaim from fans. It was also a financial success, receiving over 3 million players by August 2023.

Sadly, this is the last Tango Gameworks ever made due to Microsoft's bad business practices. Thankfully, on August 11, 2024, Krafton acquired the former Tango Gameworks staff that could be potential to making a sequel.
