History Civil War: Secret Missions is a historical first-person shooter video game developed by Cauldron Ltd, and released on 4 November 2008 by Activision Value and the History Channel for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. It is a sequel to The History Channel: Civil War – A Nation Divided.
Bad Qualities
Note: Some of its flaws from the previous Civil War game are still there
- Unlike the previous Civil War game in the series where you can't die alot, here you die very fast and alot of times.
- The difficulty is unbalanced, the enemies A.I can range from being dumb and unnecesarly unfair as they can shoot weapons faster than you and be very accurate always hitting you, luckly it doesn't happen all the time.
- The allies A.I aren't any better as they can sometimes shoot at nothing.
- Also unlike the previous Civil War game, instead of quick save there are checkpoints that doesn't always trigger when it's needed to.
- Once again, there aren't any story to follow.
- The length of the game is so short lasting only 4 HOURS, it might as well be an expansion rather than a sequel.
- The PC Port still has no V-Sync option causing the bullets not being able to kill the enemies.
- Unlike in most FPS game to melee in this game on PC is X instead of F, luckly it can be re-binded but it feels really weird to see this as an default option.
- The audio mixing is bad
Good Qualities
- The graphics look stunningly beautiful for 2008 standards, and still look impressive today.
- There are skill points that can be used as upgrade to makes this game less harder.
- Just like the previous game, the PC Port has graphical settings.
- The weapons are fun to use.
- The voice acting is really good.
- Unlike previous history channel games, you can finally sprint.
- The Auto Aim finally works on consoles.
Reception
The game received mediocre ratings from critics.
Many critics did however noted the game to be one of the best of its genre, noting how special it was due to its unique setting. GameFaqs described it as currently the best first person Civil War shooter in its "Top 10 American Civil War Games". Louis Bulaong from What Culture listed it as #10 in its 10 Best Historical First-Person Shooter Video Games, stating, "While Civil War: Secret Missions was a low-budget game that garnered only mediocre ratings, it was the first to show the gaming industry that there is a place for shooters beyond the invention of tanks and portable machine guns. Civil War action games such as Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood and War of Rights would take and improve the same steps years later.
