Home: Adventures with Tip & Oh is an American animated television series produced by Dreamworks, which was based on the 2015 animated movie, Home, which in turn was loosely based of the 2007 children's book The True Meaning of Smekday by Adam Rex. The show became accessible on Netflix. The series aired from July 26, 2016 to concluding its final season on July 20, 2018, two years after the show began. It also had a Christmas special, "Home for the Holidays", aired in 2017.

While the book received positive reception, and the movie mainly mixed, the show ended up being seen as worse than the movie, despite still being average.

Plot

After the events of the movie, Tip visits Oh and the two decide to move in on her house on Earth, and they continue to have wacky adventures in the town.

Bad Qualities

1. Let's get the elephant out of the room: Similar to the movie (which was no better), it's an insult to the original book, even more so than the movie, as it only starts flanderizing and exaggerating characters a lot, and no longer has the main charm the book, and to an extent, the movie had.
2. Most of the humor of the show isn't funny or charming, as it usually involves Boovs being weird or failed gross-out humor. For example:
   • In the first episode, Oh eats the ribbon instead of using classic scissors.
   • Also in the first episode, Oh makes a disgusting meal, and as a result, Tip vomits.
     • For an insult to an already unfunny joke, Oh says that Tip's mom has a stronger stomach, but then she vomits.
   • In the third episode, "Little Kisses", Oh has a habit of eating kitty litter, and in one scene, he turns really dry, which is disturbing.
   • In the fifth episode, "It's A Secret", Captain Smek tries to steal Oh's "secret" and ends up taking his birthday cake thinking it's the "secret".
   • In the sixth episode, "Queen of Thighs", Lucy keeps on clicking the refresh button in hopes of getting a view, then Tip views it outside and says "Mom's so cute".
3. Many characters are still cliché, stereotypical, annoying, unlikable, bland, and have other various flaws.
   • Oh himself is a very annoying and cliché protagonist, as he is the "different one" that's been used in a way too many pieces of media.
   • Tip is a very stereotypical adventurous tomboy.
   • Kyle is the idiotic Police Officer.
   • Garfeldt is the weird eccentric odd Boov.
   • Captain Smek, like in the movie, is an angry bland forgettable villain who wants to destroy Oh.
   • Neighbor Donnie is the grumpy, old, lonely neighbor who barely contributes.
   • Sharzod (the worst character of the series) is the cliché fashion, girly girl, and an alpha bitch.
   • Pom-Pom (also counts as the worst) is the stereotypical mean popular girl and also an alpha bitch.
4. Some of songs often are cringe-worthy or very forgettable.
   • Not only that, but if you use GarageBand a lot, you'll notice some of the songs in the series uses synths from there. Not all, though, luckily.
5. Like a lot of other Dreamworks shows based off their movies, the CGI animation changed to 2D flash animation, which usually looks decent. Instead, they used stilted flash animation, which despite looking fluid, can be uncanny, lazy, and often have notable errors, showing that the animators were rushing together what they were making. They even reused a scene from the intro in the second to last scene in the final episode!
6. For an insult to injury, the backgrounds themselves are very bland, putting already mediocre animation into a boring environment.
7. Though not to the extreme, it can attempt to be modern and hip too much, such as cringe worthy "modern" dialogue, and entire episodes centered around internet fame.
8. The dialogue as well is pretty cringe-worthy most of the time.
9. Weak character development, which really doesn't even happen until the last 2 seasons.
10. The show was blatantly rushed, as shown by not only the lazy animation but the fact 102 episodes plus a whole special were made in the span of 2 years.
11. Most of the plots for the episodes are very boring, cliché, and mean-spirited. And when they do have a decent concept, such as Oh getting sick or Tip trying to "fix" Sticky, they often are wasted due to bad writing.

13. Overall, it's a forgettable show that killed any chance the Home franchise had.

Good Qualities

1. The show's concept of Oh returning to Earth after the movie is a creative idea, but it was executed poorly. The continuity from the movie to the show is also handled pretty well.
2. Seasons 3 and 4 can be seen as improvements as they make characters more likable and have more good episodes.
3. Decently catchy theme song, especially the extended version.
4. Some of the animations can be fluid and creative at some times, due to it being animated by the same people who animated "The Marvelous Adventures of Flapjack", though it can look off.
5. Some characters are decent, even if stereotypical or bland, like Tip, Lucy, Pig, and Oh in some cases. Tip and Oh's friendship as well is very heart warming.
6. Most often there are good morals.
7. Depending on your view, there is some charm to it.
8. There are some decent jokes and humor sometimes.
9. Some of the songs, despite being somewhat cringe worthy, are very catchy and have decent lyrics.
10. Decent voice acting (except for people like Oh), which is surprising as almost everyone was recast.

Reception

While the show surprisingly did decent with critics and has a 5.9/10 on IMDB, the show overall mainly got mixed reviews, from fans of the movie and/or book alike. Some praised it due to being heartwarming with its songs, while others disliked it for being unfaithful to the book and having bad characters. As of a result of mediocre reviews, it ended up ending in 2018 with no signs of it returning, though it still remains on Netflix's platform.
