Homer's Night Out is the 10th episode of the first season of The Simpsons.
Plot
Homer finds himself in hot water when Bart gets a photo of him dancing with a belly dancer known as Princess Kashmir.
Bad Qualities
- Marge is rather unlikable in this episode; she kicks Homer out of the house and yells at him solely for dancing next to another woman.
- This is also very hypocritical of her, since she went out with Jacques behind Homer's back in the previous episode "Life on the Fast Lane" (even though this episode came before that one in production order).
- She claims that he "treated the woman as an object" even though dancing next to another woman is not a way of treating them like objects.
- Homer is treated like a butt-monkey throughout half the episode. Even when he apologizes to Marge, she still doesn't forgive him.
- As usual for Season 1, the animation has not aged well and contains tons of errors, washed out colors and mediocre character designs.
- The second act uses the typical "keep the secret" trope as Bart prints out a copy of the picture of Homer dancing next to a woman to Milhouse, but Milhouse shows the picture to a friend who also wants a copy of the picture, which then causes the entire town to know of the picture.
- Some other characters also act unlikable towards Homer.
- Mr. Burns reprimands Homer because of the picture as well, although he isn't as mean-spirited as Marge is.
- Princess Kashmir literally tries to kick Homer off the edge of a cage during the third act.
- Homer's speech at the end of the episode was rather cringe-worthy.
- The episode overall has an incredibly preachy message about not treating women like objects and tries way too hard to tell a moral about treating women with respect, despite (like what we said earlier) the fact that Homer only danced next to another woman and wasn't doing anything considered to be adulterous.
Good Qualities
- The first act involving Bart buying a spy camera was pretty good, as there were some funny moments such as Bart repeatedly asking the post woman (along with her mimicking what he said whenever she came) "Where's my spy camera?!" and Bart trying to take a picture of his butt with it when it arrives.
- Some funny moments, such as:
- Marge strangling Homer when he tries to strangle Bart.
- Barney phoning Marge and telling her she left her porch light on.
- Bart changing a sign at the seafood restaurant from "Cod Platter" to "Cold Pet Rat".
- The voice acting is good, as can be expected from a "Golden Age" Simpsons episode.
- The episode does succeed in making you feel sorry for Homer.
- The scene where Mr. Burns admits to Homer that, in spite of his financial success, he's lived a very lonely life is quite touching.

Reception
Even though Homer's Night Out received positive reviews from critics and also has a rating of 7.4/10 on IMDB, the episode has a generally mixed reception amongst fans, many of whom criticized it due to its preachiness as well as the fact that Homer is treated like a butt-monkey for simply dancing next to another woman.
Trivia
- This episode contains the first physical appearance of Carl Carlson and the first speaking appearance of Lenny Leonard. However, their voice actors are switched around.
