Horrid Henry and the Detention Diva is the twenty-fourth episode in Series 5 and the 232nd episode overall of the Horrid Henry animated television series.
Plot
Competition can come from anywhere, as Henry discovers when Peter decides to be a bit less than perfect.
Diva Qualities
- Peter is at his worst here. After he gets angry at Henry over a minor incident, he spends the whole night ignoring him. Then, he wakes up the next day and kicks a bucket over Soggy Sid's head. This gets him a detention, and he starts to go into a depression. Afterwards, he overreacts to getting a detention by acting like he's temporarily leaving home and at the end, he doesn't get punished for any of this. And what's worse? He did all of this because Henry accidently got his candy floss eaten by a dog. We kid you not.
- While Miss Oddbod makes a tolerable appearance, she believes that Henry kicked a bucket over Soggy Sid's head too.
- Soggy Sid is no better. He has no problem tormenting Henry for something he didn't even say, but shows full submission once he realises what Peter rudely asked to be excused.
- Mr. Tiddler serves no purpose but to tell the same old tired gag of weeing on Henry's leg, and the little old lady calls Henry and Peter both Horrid Boys. What makes it worse is that Peter mocks Henry for this after, and Henry just looks on in disappointment as the scene ends.
- It sends an unintentionally bad message to viewers; take the fall for something your friends did and allow yourself to be punished. What's worse is that Henry hates Peter, so he didn't deserve ANY of this to happen to him.
- The flash animation, while a noticeable improvement in comparison to later episodes, is still below-average, as it's still stilted and unnatural in some areas.
- Plot hole: Why didn't Peter just inform Mum and Dad about what Henry did with his candy floss?
- Henry's fantasies about 'Impertinent Peter' only serve as filler. In addition, 'Wormlet' doesn't sound like a threatening nickname in the slightest.
- Terrible Ending: When Henry takes the fall for Peter, it is revealed that for all the trouble caused, Henry has to serve an octuple detention. Brainy Brian explains that Henry and Soggy Sid will have a detention eight times longer than normal, end it ends with both screaming "NOOOO!" Soggy Sid deserved it, but it sends out the wrong message mentioned in DQ#4 and the rug just gets pulled from underneath Henry.
Perfect Qualities
- Henry is really likeable here. He might have been wrong for stealing the candy floss and starting the conflict, but he openly apologises to the audience and saying that he's going to give it back. Then, he actively tries to help Peter and even takes the fall for him, despite the bad ending.
- Everyone else is likeable, and even Moody Margaret is tolerable when compared to normal.
- Good voice acting (mostly) and music, as is expected.
- The episode started out good until Mr. Tiddler ate the candy floss.
- Counteracting DQ#4, the episode at least tried to tell a good message of paying good deeds forward, even if it was botched.
- Henry and Ralph debating how to get past Soddy Sid was the only good joke in the episode.
- Soggy Sid getting splashed by the bucket was equally funny as it was satisfying.
- Soggy Sid got karma by getting a bucket kicked over his head, as mentioned above, and his octuple detention with Henry. Peter temporarily got his comeuppance, until Henry unknowingly took the detention instead.
Reception
The episode itself has been criticised for Peter's behaviour, and is why it's not viewed in high regards on the fandom. Equally, it has a 4.9/10 on IMDb.
Trivia
- This is the second episode to be animated in Flash animation; the first being "Horrid Henry and the Demon Dentist".
