Hostel is a 2005 horror film directed by Eli Roth. It is the first film in the Hostel series.

Plot

A group of American college students traveling in Europe decide to visit a hostel in Slovakia, which is claimed to be full of beautiful women. Instead, they are dragged into a dark world, where rich people pay to be able to torture and kill people.

Why It Sucks

  1. The movie uses gratuitous violence and gore just for the sake of shocking the audience; beyond that, there's very little story.
  2. To put things simply, none of the main characters are likable. They're all annoying, flat, and underdeveloped assholes who are only interested in partying, having sex, and doing drugs.
    • Ultimately, with everyone in the movie being either evil or a jerk, there's no one to really care about.
  3. Excessive number of homophobic slurs, which can come off as offensive to those who are part of the LGBTQ, mainly those who are homosexual.
  4. Poor pacing. The movie takes over 50 minutes to get started before suddenly rushing to an ending.
  5. The end of the movie is way too full of contrivances and coincidences.
  6. Unfitting soundtrack by Nathan Barr.
  7. The movie's portrayal of Slovakia is inaccurate.

The Only Redeeming Quality

  1. The lighting and cinematography are pretty decent, thanks to Milan Chadima.

Reception

Hostel received mixed reviews, with a 5.9/10 on IMDb as well as a 59% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. Criticism focused on its overreliance on gratuitous violence.

Trivia

  • The movie was controversial in Slovakia, which disliked its portrayal as an underdeveloped, crime-ridden backwater.
  • The original ending for the movie was Paxton kidnapping the daughter of one of the villains'. It was later changed to him just killing the villain in the bathroom.
