It's the Girl in the Red Truck, Charlie Brown is the 32nd prime-time animated TV special based upon the popular comic strip Peanuts, by Charles M. Schulz.
Why It Should Be Eaten by the Coyotes
- Misleading title: Despite Charlie Brown supposedly being the titular character, he only appears once in the entire special and is never seen again.
- The mix of live-action and animation is poorly done, as Spike doesn't exactly fit into the environment. He doesn't even have a shadow, veering him into uncanny valley territory.
- Jill Schultz gives a rather mediocre performance as the Girl In The Red Truck.
- The plot feels like a watered-down version of Beauty and The Beast.
- The whole concept of animation and live-action mixed feels similar to Who Framed Roger Rabbit. Although Charles Schulz came up with the idea of a live-action/animation hybrid before said movie, the special's production delays caused it to air after Who Framed Roger Rabbit.
- The plot goes nowhere and all it boils down to is Spike and the girl's extremely uninteresting relationship.
- Spike gets hunted down by coyote hunters, which feels out of place for a Peanuts special.
- This special is one of the many examples of how the Peanuts specials jumped the shark, as the premise is so bizarre for a Peanuts special.
- The other human characters are uninteresting and don't have much personality.
Redeeming Qualities
- The animation is passable, even though the mix of live-action and animation is poorly done.
- At least Charlie Brown and Snoopy were decently voiced.
Reception
Whilst most of the Peanuts specials were critically acclaimed like A Charlie Brown Christmas, You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown, It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown, and so on, this one received majorly negative reviews from many fans and critics, for the poor use of using both live action and animation, the writing, the title, and the plot that went nowhere. It was often considered to be the worst Peanuts special of all time.
