Jeffy Ball Z is a non-canon YouTube parody series created by SML.
The series is a parody of the Dragon Ball Z franchise that chronicles the adventures of Jeffyku as he battles many foes in his quest for the dragon-balls with the assistance of his family. The series was aired on YouTube on January 17th, 2022.
Why It Has All The Dragon Ballz
- The series has many creative jokes relating to Dragon Ball Z and other popular media, such as the narrator or Jeffyku's mispronunciation of the Kame Hami Ha as Hakuna Matata.
- Many characters from the original SML Movies have been improved greatly.
- Jeffy is much less bratty than his original, as well as more heroic and caring to his family, such as in episode 4 when he gives up his wish to save them.
- Junior is less of an Idiot Houdini and his portrayal of Vegeta is pretty funny and is a more interesting character than the canon Junior. Also, the running gag of his nickname being confused with other words is pretty funny.
- Rose is a more responsible parent to Jeffy, as well as more supportive for Marvin.
- The concept of a fan of DBZ going out to find the Dragon Balls himself is a fun idea and is executed decently.
- The acting is still pretty great, especially Lance Thirtyacre and Chris Netherton.
- The villains are pretty funny and entertaining, such as Frieza, Brooklyn Guy, Vegeta, and even some of the minor villains.
- The confused reactions of the background characters to the main characters are pretty funny.
- The fights featured are entertaining and has pretty good fight choreography.
- The series marks the return of Doofy the Dragon, a fan-favorite character from older SML videos, as well as Shrek.
- Episode 4 is a pretty satisfying ending to the first season, as well as the most cinematic episode in the series so far.
- Unlike other SML videos, the series acknowledges when a running gag is getting boring and when to stop using it.
- The animation in Episode 4 was pretty funny, despite being filler.
Bad Qualities
- While the jokes are usually fine, many of them feel extremely juvenile.
- There are plenty of filler scenes, such as Brooklyn Guy at the black market in Episode 2 or the animated flashback in Episode 4.
- Misleading Poster: The thumbnails for the episodes feature Jeffyku wearing a diaper and also in a grassy planet in space, when in reality, neither of those appear.
- There are moments where the characters revert back to their previous personalities.
- The editing is pretty cheap, which is normal for SML.
- The references to DBZ are seen as cringe-worthy at times.
Reception
Upon the release of the first episode, the series has received mostly positive reception from critics, audiences, and fans of DBZ. The series has led to YTPs, memes, and supportive comments and has gained a decent following among SML fans.
Trivia
- This is the second series made by SML on the 4th channel.
- The fifth episode was meant to be released on Friday, February 9th, but was pushed back for unknown reasons.
