Kamen Rider Black: Taiketsu Shadow Moon (仮面かめんライダーBLACKブラック 対決たいけつシャドームーン Kamen Raidā Burakku Taiketsu Shadō Mūn, Kamen Rider Black: Showdown with Shadow Moon), is a 1988 platformer game made by Human Entertainment and Bandai for the Famicom Disk System, based on the television series Kamen Rider Black.
Why It Can't Kick Kaijin
- Inconsistent controls: For example, you press B to punch, and to kick you have to press Up, but you can also press A to jump. To do a side jump, you have to press A, then press either Left or Right.
- Awful music, especially for a show that had a great soundtrack.
- It also comes with repetitive soundtrack that plays exactly only one song unless you’re playing the Rider Machine levels.
- Kamen Rider Black moves way too slow. To rub salt in the wound, in boss fights, (not counting the mini-bosses) he walks faster, at the cost of taking a few seconds just to turn around.
- Broken hit detection.
- Unfair difficulty, due to all of the enemies moving faster than you. They also can attack you easier than you hit them.
- Insultingly bad graphics, even by Famicom/NES standards.
- Poor grasp of the source material. For instance, Kamen Rider Black fights enemies like giant spiders, cheetahs, and giant moths, something that never occurred in the show. Although Black fights a spider-like monster as a first monster of the show in the very first episode, this one wasn't a footsoldier but a "monster-of-the-week" and there were no footsoldiers in the series.
- Shadow Moon is purple for some reason, and his Kingstone is blue instead of green. He also lacks his signature weapon, Satan Sabre, and looks more like Kamen Rider Black RX than himself. Should we mention that Kamen Rider Black RX wasn't aired yet, at that time?
- The game is based on the first 15 episodes of the show, but for some reason Shadow Moon is in it. Shadow Moon didn't appear until episode 35.
- Terrible good ending.
- Bilgenia, a really important villain during the first half of the series is nowhere to be found in this game.
Redeeming Qualities
- The transformation scene is amazing to watch.
- The Rider Machine levels can be fun, though that's not saying much.
