Karate is a fighting game developed and published by Ultravision for Atari 2600 in October 1982 and re-released in 1987 by Froggo. It is known for being one of the worst games for the Atari 2600.

Why It Sucks

  1. For an Atari 2600 game, the graphics are ugly. The fighters look like colored shadows that wear underwear and they even look like stick figures made out of a bunch of squares. Not to mention, their animations are choppy and look like it belongs to a TV show with bad animation. Even E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial looks better than this, and both of these games were released in the same year, 1982.
  2. Sluggish and broken controls that make the game unplayable. The game requires 3 buttons, but the Atari 2600 only has one button, meaning your fighter does whatever he wants, basically punch or kick your opponent until a knock out will happen if the time runs out.
  3. Bad hit detection. Sometimes you can hit the opponent, sometimes not, even if you are facing him to the point you would actually hit him easily. And it's a random chance if you will hit your opponent or not, since sometimes your fighter can actually not hit your opponent, despite actually looking like your opponent got hit.
  4. When you get kicked out of the ring, you and your opponent just appear at the center, which makes no sense, especially since getting kicked out of the ring in real life does not teleport you into the center, but in the game, it actually happens, and basically it's a confusion.
  5. Your fighter moves pretty slow. It takes a few seconds to get into your opponent and fight him until the time runs out, and no matter how much you will move, there is no way to walk faster. Instead, you will have to walk a little, and fight your opponent.
  6. Terrible sound effects. The sound effect that plays if you hit your opponent is a grating buzz sound or vice versa, like if you were hitting a metal or a big wood or something, rather than a human who fights with you in karate. Even the victory sound effect is terrible and sounds no better than the hitting your opponent sound.
  7. The gameplay is just repetitive. All you can do in the game is fight your opponents to get point to win if the timer runs out, and that's it. You cannot do anything else in the game. There aren't even any other modes, just the normal one.

Reception

Karate received negative reviews by critics and gamers alike because of the hit detection, audio, broken controls, poor graphics, limited moveset and repetitive gameplay. In 1991, Digital Press chose Karate for one of the worst Atari 2600 games ever. The Angry Video Game Nerd condemned the game, calling it crap.
