Kubo 3 is an homebrew game released in 2021 by SJ Games, it is a sequel to Kubo 2 and the first full game SJ Games released.

Why It Rocks

  1. It is a huge improvement over the first two games, which we're pretty fun but not nearly as decent as this game, and the pointers below show.
  2. The game is inspired by many games released in the 80s, the map screen is inspired from the Zelda games, the water levels are inspired from Alex Kidd in Miracle World, and the platforming levels are inspired from Super Mario Bros., in which this game make a lot of callback of those games.
  3. Decent graphics that are improved from the first two games, here they are simple but very good looking as it is colorful, full of details despite being a bit primitive, and overall is more detailled, the sprites are also pretty good and are slighly better than the first two games.
  4. Great characters designs.
  5. Tight and responsive controls, Kubo will always respond to your commands and they are a massive improvement over the controls from the first two, which we're good but quite clunky.
  6. Decent soundtrack.
  7. The game is quite challenging, although it isn't the most challenging NES game and the difficulty is still balanced, not too hard nor too easy.
  8. Fun gameplay that mix platforming with adventure gameplay, a pretty good mix and could remain peoples of the Doraemon games on SNES (although it is likely unintentional).
  9. It show that even kids can make good games, even though this wasn't programmed entirely by the kid but rather by his dad, it still impressive.

Bad Qualities

  1. The game is still too short, lasting only 15 minutes, as there's only 4 levels.
  2. The bosses are way too easy, though it is somewhat understable considering WIR#9.
