Lethal Weapon 3 is a 1992 American buddy cop action film directed by Richard Donner and written by Jeffrey Boam and Robert Mark Kamen. The sequel to Lethal Weapon 2 (1989), it is the third installment in the Lethal Weapon film series and stars Mel Gibson, Danny Glover, Joe Pesci, Rene Russo, and Stuart Wilson.
Plot
Veteran police detective Roger Murtaugh (Danny Glover) is only days away from retiring when he and his tough partner, Martin Riggs (Mel Gibson), are roped into an important internal affairs case. Working with the beautiful, no-nonsense Sergeant Lorna Cole (Rene Russo) and aided by the shifty informant Leo Getz (Joe Pesci), Murtaugh and Riggs begin to close in on a black-market weapons operation involving corrupt cop and arms dealer Jack Travis (Stuart Wilson).
Why It Rocks
- Although it's not as great as the first two films, it's still a good follow-up to them.
- It still contains elements, humor, and action as always.
- Mel Gibson and Danny Glover still give their best performances.
- Rene Russo gives a great performance as Lorna Cole, a female equivalent to Riggs who is just as crazy and tough as him and becomes his girlfriend in the end.
- Richard Donner does a good job directing as always.
- It has a lot of humor, compared to the prequel, such as Murtaugh failing to do a back spin, the duo dealing with an obnoxious jaywalker, and Riggs beating up the director in "The Three Stooges" style.
- Leo returns still retaining his funny and comical personality.
- His quotes: "They fuck you at the hospital!", "Hey, guys, guys! You think I could get a gun this time?", "I'm dying Roge! I'm so cold!".
- Stuart Wilson plays a menacing villain named Jack Travis who was once a LAPD officer, but got fired for his reckless actions and serves as a dark parallel to Riggs.
- It has a car chase like the previous films.
- Jack Travis's last quote before dying: "Go to hell, Riggs!", followed by Riggs' quote: "You first!".
- Still contains action scenes, especially ones with Lorna which is awesome.
- The soundtrack is amazing, like the first two films.
Bad Qualities
- It's not as good as the first two films.
- Leo is sometimes treated badly and is a Butt-Monkey in the film.
Reception
Rotten Tomatoes gives the film a score of 60%, with an average rating of 6.1/10, based on 48 reviews from critics. The website's "Critics Consensus" for the film reads, "Murtaugh and Riggs remain an appealing partnership, but Lethal Weapon 3 struggles to give them a worthy new adventure as it cranks up the camp along with the mean-spiritedness". Metacritic gives a weighted average rating of 40/100 from 26 critics, indicating "mixed or average reviews". Audiences polled by CinemaScore gave the film an average grade of "A-" on an A+ to F scale.
